What are peoples thoughts on this?

It's hard to say without seeing and holding it in person, but it looks like a bit of a monster (size wise).

The Apple Pencil will presumably be sold separately, and without being able to insert it into the iPad when not in use I think will be a pain to carry around; doesn't look like the smart keyboard cover has anything on it to hold the pencil either.

Surface Pro 3. Comes with integrated kickstand, a Pen and far more storage. Full Windows PC in a similar form factor.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Yes they missed the mark
why would you want something that size and not even a full OS.
The standard/keyboard also looks cheap

There is a lot of commentary about it being a Surface Pro clone however it isn't close to a Surface Pro clone until they put OS X on it.

They talk about it being the future of computing so maybe we will see a device with OSX in that form factor in the future.

Interesting how they are now having to follow Windows into the convertible tablet space where they said they would never go.

Hm, its still first gen device i reckon. But for enterprise, I think the Surface 3 pro is much better than the iPad pro (at present). Until the iPad pro is sporting a fully fledged desktop experience, it wont be displacing the Surface 3 Pro.

The Surface 3 Pro is what all the execs would prefer to use. The beauty of the iPad was that you can use it in hand while being on the go. iPad Pro is bigger - heavier and hence, less convenient.

At present, the ideal combo is Surface 3 Pro + iPad Air 2 + iPhone

The US$169 Smart Keyboard cover looks average to me, I can't wait to try one and see how good or bad it really is

The US$99 pen isn't bundled.

Pretty much my thoughts too. It's like they have made a Surface RT, just with way more apps.

I do see it as a shot across the bow of Surface (maybe Pro).

Sure its not a full desktop OS, but to many that's a positive not a negative. I get the feeling Apple would love to use iOS for all their hardware if they could get away with it.

I'm kind of tempted by it, but feel its a bit too big for me to use like an iPad. Its more like a laptop/computer again.

I'm kind of interested in these, would be great for the wife as she remote desktops in when out of office so iOS is not a major issue but i suspect pricepoint will get you a nice surface pro so might as well do it properly first time around

I had a client visit me earlier in the week and as many do pulls out an iPad to check some emails etc, later in the meeting he pulled out his surface pro to do some real stuff, i live for the day that our corporate solution is a surface pro type machine rather than ultrabook

Im keen on one, I use an Ipad Air, a bigger screen would be a great portable TV with its streaming apps or via the new ATV. Split screen makes it nicer as well

Re the full OS, if Apple can make the use of productivity apps just as painlesss as a full OS, the tablet OS will do. You dont really need Windows Explorer/Finder
as your files live inside the app. Makes sense. Be like Goodreader and allow create/delete/rename folders within the app.The main issue is thet iOS tablet apps are lite featured, they need to be full featured IMO

Not for me. The weight is the killer for me. I will just upgrade my iPad Air2 when the next version is released.

I have never looked at my iPad and thought "Gee I need a bigger screen"

How many apps has it got? iPad has probably hundreds of thousands ,and everything, and it lighter, and screen a bit bigger
The issue is they are different devices, one is a tablet, the other is hybrid. Tablet wise I feel the iPad is far superior, due to the app numbers
and its not a while lot more than the 9.7 iPad cost wise, so i feel its good value

A laptop is better value than the iPad as its got more ports, and so forth, but again, they are different devices

The surface has every program ever written for x86. Number of apps means nothing, its how useful the apps are.

Weight wise it is 100 grams heavier but it is a year and a half old.

I think the really interesting comparison will be Surface pro 4 vs iPad pro.
