NZ POI's for SAT NAV devices?

Hi guys,

Been hunting around the more reknowned sites but couldnt really find any POIs that were specific to NZ. Pokcet GPS world for example only supplies UK POIs. Anyone know where i can them?

I've started compiling a small list of my own in the meantime but would like the full list if possible. Am happy to share mine out. So far ive compiled places that i kinda frequent like pizza takeaways and asian takeaways. :)

I got a POI file off the DSE website for my Navman a wee while back. Has the majority of the fixed speed cameras located around NZ :)

Thanks Grant. The latest tomtom maps came with the latest speed camera locations so it seems to loaded already. I was basically referring more to the POIs like restaurants, takeaways etc. There are some in the standard out of the box device but not extensive. If you do stumble on any others, be great if you could share it out.

I guess it's up to us as users to come up with local NZ POI files.

I;mnot 100% sure how this could be done though, but perhaps you could simply start by getting a list of a certain type of business (eg BP petrol stations) and manually enter them manually as a POI file. I always thought that it would be in the interests of large companies to release POI files of where their businesses are located. For example, it would be useful for the consumer to simply go to the BP website and download the locations of all their petrol stations in NZ.

i think it might be due to the small number of people actually using these SAT NAV devices hence why it hasnt really been given too much attention by the big companies yet. Incidentally, petrol stations are already included, in the tomtom devices anyway. I started creating new POIs of the Hell Pizza branch and the noodle canteen takeaway so i hope to build on this list. If you guys think there are stuff that should be included and isnt, let me know. I can populate the list and share it out.

I use these maps and the POI's are excellent, have everything you could want.

The site above provides free auto routing maps for all of NZ but they are Garmin specific, not sure if you can use the POI's for other manufacturers or not.

Public Loos! :) Not sure if they are featured on any POI's for any GPS device.. Always handy... when you gotta go, you gotta go ;)

Raftcomm, care to give a step by step on how you are making these POI files? Are you using a TomTom device?

Hi,

Sure! Its quite simple really but very tedious i have to say.

The steps are for the tomtom device only so im not sure about navman. If memory serves me right, the POI files generated are inter changeable and can be used on a navman but if thats inaccurate, please do correct me if im wrong.

- Click on the map screen
- Change Preference
- Manage POIs
- Add POIs
- Begin typing the description, address and phone number.

Because the tomtom devices comes with the HOME software, i can do this all on the desktop and not on the device itself so its alot faster. Once completed, go to the New_Zealand map folder (on the device) and look for the newly created POI category (if a new one is created) and just copy the files with this new category name.

If you added new POIs to existing categories then just copy the POI files that has the existing category name on it.
