I'm planning to change to snap. I currently run a small server with person email and other services. On both my current and previous ISPs the dynamic IP addresses they issued changed so infrequently (current ISP only once in 2 and a half years) that I didn't see the need to pay extra per month for a static IP. Instead I was happy to deal with the short down time whilst my DNS updates took effect, on the rare occasion that the address changed. Are the addresses snap issues similarly stable, or do they change much more frequently and hence would necessitate requesting a static address?

Just use Dynamic DNS.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

I've used dynamic DNS (thru DynDNS) in the past, but they have yearly charge for using a custom domain name which would end up being a similar cost to just paying for a static address in the first place. I don't know what other dynamic DNS services charge for custom domains though, and if there are any that don't charge.

If you poke around there are a few free ones
My Asus router has a free DynDNS service built in for instance.

Hurricane Electric offers dynamic DNS for your own domains, free http://dns.he.net

There are other providers of dynamic dns services though, I used to use one through http://freedns.afraid.org/. My fritz box can automatically update the the ip address of that and then use that address in my cname record.

Another option (if you have a fritz box) is to set up the myfritz service. As part of that, you receive a unique url that points to your own network. I have the service on, however, no remote access enabled so it's just giving me access to my network.

Can't update the A record, and some stuff doesn't like that. Once Snap enable static IPv6 address "Soon"*, you can have an AAAA record too :-)

* Soon, as in how the telstraclear mysky equivalent box was coming "soon".

I hear they're pretty unstable.  I saw one yesterday and it kept falling over.  It's mates UDP and TCP were trying to help it along, but everytime it fell over, they tripped over and smashed into the pavement as well. Quite embarrassing, not sure if it was drunk or not.

I heard of another where the police kept getting called to his house, his neighbours would complain he'd been spoofing them again and it was starting to cause issues.  Turns out he was mentally unstable and kept thinking he was someone else.

Hope this helps.

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

I need more than just a unique url though, because I need to me able to set the MX record for my own domain to point to my server. Hurricane electric that Sir humphrey mention could potentially be an option though.

$5 for a static IP.

How much time have you spent trying to avoid a $5 a month fee, and how much is that time worth? :)

Lol! Whilst very amusing, I'm not sure it does help much :-p

That's pretty much why I'm trying to find out how often they change. As they have changed so infrequently on my current ISP I haven't really wasted any time. If however they change fairly frequently on snap (which from peoples responses I'm assuming they do - not that anyone has actually answered that question specifically...) I'm happy to pay for a static IP.

They change regularly - not sure if it's multiple times a day, daily, or weekly, but I know I had my IP whitelisted in AWS for controlling a VM, couldn't work out why I couldn't connect until I realised my IP had changed. You should assume it changes at least daily.

Talking to a couple of other snap users in the office, they say they believe it changes every time the modem reconnects.

Ok, thanks, that's what I needed to know.

As much as these conspiracies are entertaining me, I'm glad that BuffyNZ is sane. Our IPv4 addresses are sticky (ish) so if you experience a brief drop in connection you may get the same one. If you reboot your modem though that is generally long enough that you would get another one.

If your IP is changing multiple times a day then you probably have an issue with your line and you should call us and chat :-)

Ok, thanks that's an even better answer. One other thing I just realised I should double check, is that you don't block port 25 like some ISPs do?
