I just noticed on the 2degrees website that they now have a Data SIM. Has this been available long?

Not really a great amount of details on it apart from saying it costs $20 and includes 100MB National Data but also says it can be used in regular SIM or MicroSIM devices.

I wonder if this is something to do with making it easier to use 2degrees with an iPad?

From 2degrees website:-
"Get online on your USB Modem, 3G WiFi Router, iPhone, iPad or other mobile data device. This can be used in regular SIM or MicroSIM devices. The 2degrees Data SIM contains 100MB National Data (Valid for 30 days from activation)."

I am not sure why anyone would want to buy this. A standard $5 SIM plus two $6 data packs gives you the same thing and for $16 rather than $20 - unless I have missed something!

The fact that the 100MB expires after 30 days does not help the iPad user either.

Hopefully there is something better on the way. For now, the XT plans for the iPad are (I cannot believe I am saying this) better!

I have to say I agree that XT's data plans are easier to deal with, and certainly better for iPad use.

Maybe this is the start of 2degrees making it a bit easier to deal with and hopefully we'll be able to manage our plans direct from the iPad soon too.

This SIM doesn't seem a great deal to me but maybe it's an adapter too which gives it a little more value.

It's basically a micro-SIM housed inside a SIM.

I bought one for my iPad in December to try it out on 2degrees, and I had to put the SIM into my wife's phone to activate it, then punch out the micro-SIM to put it in the iPad.

Now that I've pushed out the micro-SIM, I can't use the SIM because you break off those little tiny plastic connector pieces (like how a normal SIM is attached to the card when you first buy one) meaning it's just junk. If I never pushed out the micro-SIM then I could still use the SIM in another device.

I'm assuming if you had an iPhone 4 you could push out the micro-SIM and activate it this way, however the instructions say to activate it first in a normal device and then put the micro-SIM into the iPad.

So to paraphrase, it's not an adapter! Once it's pushed out that's it, no more SIM!

As you bought yours in December they must have been out a while then, I thought they were something new which is why I started the thread, sorry guys!

This is different to how I see the situation now. Originally you had to buy a normal SIM, enable it in a phone, and then call customer services and then they would send you a microSIM to replace it to use in the iPad, a long winded process! I am not sure when this changed but it would seem that now you buy a data SIM which is a SIM which has a microSIM punch out in it which sounds much better.

Maybe I'm really outdated and it's been like this for a while but when I got my iPad in July then only way to get a microSIM was using the above process.

Setting up a regular sized SIM and then doing a SIM swap was still the normal practice when I connected my iPad to 2degrees back in December. I was never given the option of a regular SIM that converts to a micro SIM, and if this had been available then it would have made things a lot easier.

Cool. So it looks like this SIM is new then. I wonder when it first came available as I only noticed it on 2degrees website today for the first time.

I probably first noticed it on their site about mid December, bought it a few days after that. Hopefully SaltyNZ (2degrees employee) will chime in on here and clarify!

Hi, yep we launched the MicroSIM just before Christmas. It comes with 100Mb on it and is a normal SIM with the MicroSIM inside it. You put the normal SIM in a phone to activate it and set up your online 'Your 2degrees' account and you're away.

I've tried uploading a picture of it, but the works PC won't allow it atm.
