I use the public transport frequently and have an issue with reception when Im down in the tunnel sometimes it does not get any reception at all.

Can someone confirm that it is an issue with 2Degrees or its due to my phones poor signal

2Degrees will be able to confirm this but I don't think they have a cell down stairs in Britomart to cover the train platform area, I would say it's not an issue with your handset

Britomart is a concrete jungle and requires a cell on the inside downstairs

by saying that so Vodafone does have a cell down stairs because on Vodafone I can get reception on same phone?

You will not be able to roam onto Vodafone at Britomart.

I travel everyday out of Britomart so these are my Observation. 2 Degrees reception generally okay in the platform area but can be patchy particularly on Platforms 1 and 5. Signal is lost when travelling in the tunnell proper. When sitting on a train signal can depend on how you hold a phone. Generally the rule seems to be hold at window height and as close to window as possible. It looks like the signal can penetrate glass easier then steel. I have seen it where holding the phone to the right ear you get signal but holding to the left ear has no signal.

When you get down to low signal levels you get dramatic effects from multipath fade*. Radio signals bounce around off the environment more or less randomly and all converge at your antenna, sometimes adding up, sometimes cancelling each other out, and always somewhat out of phase.

The baseband radio hardware and the format of the radio packets themselves are designed to try take advantage of it by effectively working out how much signal 'smearing' for want of a better word there is in the radio channel, and configuring a digital filter to be the opposite of that. [In 2G there's a known bit pattern in the middle of each radio burst; the receiver compares what it received to what it knows it should have received, and uses that difference to calculate the maximum likelihood configuration of a filter to invert the radio channel's characteristics. I believe 3G and above do something broadly similar, but also use modulation methods that are inherently more resistant to interference].

This is why a slight movement can make a seemingly large impact on signal strength: the wavelength of a cellular signal is on the order of a few cm, so moving a few cm can make several db difference in signal strength. Also, yes, radio signals go through glass better than steel, in much the same way light does. :-)

*Yes, I know this also happen at high signal levels, but as the user you tend not to notice because the signal is, well, high.
