Rambaldi: Normally my connection is crap between 4 to 11ish, but today at 5:45 its still pretty reasonable, 250-350 kb/sec compared to 5-20 kb/sec during peak. Get 1500+ kb/sec offpeak of course, but dont expect those speeds during peak.

Was a bit like this yesterday. A little worse but definitely workable past 4/5, which is an expected amount of congestion, but around 7:30/8pm it completely tanked back down to what Snackos seems to be getting now - unusable speeds/latency.

Tracerts for me are fluctuating wildly right now - anything from 30ms to 120ms on the 60.234.8.199 hop.

The thing I don't get is, this is totally local congestion.

One would think adding capacity locally's cheaper than say, laying down an trans-pacific fibre or something.

Telecom has confirmed the changes they planned didn't work as expected.

They have some planned works tonight to resolve this issue.

Hopefully it involves some 802.1AX . To me this looks like the affects of school children going online at 4pm , followed by the working population at 5pm onwards.

Hopefully whatever they're planning on doing tonight works, or I'll have to log a fault, and I hate logging faults.

Orcon aren't currently unbundling the large exchanges in other cities/towns like Hamilton, Christchurch and Wellington.

haven't been reading the papers? :P

We signed a joint deal with Compass/Callplus to share unbundled exchanges. It will open up the possiblity of unbundling more.

Fair point, but I was under the impression that the deal was more they share your gear in Auckland and you share their gear in Hamilton sort of thing.

Will be interesting to see anyway.

After sending a support ticket on 24th May, I have just got a reply 5th June.

That is bad. Orcon's customers are just not that important. Always my fault with my gear...never a ISP issue.

Nearly made up my mind to switch provider.

I'm really interested.

I've been with every top-tier ISP in NZ, currently with TelstraClear (and from my post history you'll see I'm not shy about criticizing them either) :)

TelstraClear and Orcon seem to be the ISPs with the best traffic caps along with semi-OK international bandwidth (though with the Reach cockups, it's been borderline recently in TCL land), I wouldn't go with any of the smaller ISPs who depend on the larger ones anyway.

Telecom's 2c/MB overage charge 40GB plan is laughably excessive. I went 10GB over one month by accident, and paid $200 for that 10GB.

With TelstraClear, I pay only $30 dollars/25GB, and I never get slowed to dialup speeds. That's roughly 20 times less for heavy users.

Vodafone don't even have an overage option, it's 40GB and then dialup, and that's it. Since they bought iHug, all innovation died.

I'm actually thinking of switching to Orcon since I'm in the city and the line itself is pretty good (13MB+/down, 1MB up, been like that with both Telecom/Vodafone as well), and Orcon has naked DSL option.

Slow as hell here again, it was a *little* better a few days ago, although the game disconnects/lag never were improved. Don't know what Telecom have been doing/trying but it clearly isn't working.

Yep. Been... better the past couple of days vs the last few weeks, but could just as easily be usage dropping from fewer people being around Friday/Saturday evenings till later than something actually being fixed.

Even so, it's an improvement, if still not quite ideal/uncongested (at least for me, a week ago and it would have been a steady 110ms+ on the second hop, which is still normally 16-20ms outside of peak hours).

I logged a fault with my ISP yesterday and got this response today.

Problem Status: Completed
Problem Detail:
TCNZ CLOSED @ 05-06-2010 17:09:00: No Congestion on the DSLAM or RAN. This DSLAM moved to a differrent RAN due to congestion on the TBY Ran. Port Reset done. Please get the csutomer to retest

Speeds are halfway back to how they were before, but I'm still noticing quite a lot of jitter and packet loss so I'm going to point this problem we're all seeing (specially if you're in Torbay) not at the ISPs, but on the wholesale network.

Looks like the TBY-RAN issue is still an issue.

Will be taking it up with Telecom again.

Its been 2 weeks(or more) already and still have the same problem during the peak time whille we are paying full price for our internet, its ridicous.

It is a known issue and some how I cant find it on orcon's status page as well, or is the tech trying to hide it... I wish those ocron peoples that answers the phone can be honest like sounddude, instead of telling me to do an isolation test and that there might be some issues with my line and/or my equipments.

might be great if we get some money back for this...lol
