SaltyNZ:

Other handsets will be rolled out in the coming months. iPhone, depending on certification (probably 5s and newer). Other Samsungs although I don't know the exact order or list of models, and longer term probably other vendors.

Any updates on when iPhones will be enabled?

Since this is well established elsewhere in the world, surely it’s just a switch flipping excercise through Apple?

There is a definite planned date for it now, but I'm afraid it's not up to me to announce it. It is indeed just a switch-flipping exercise, but Apple have a lot of is to dot and ts to cross before they'll certify. As I understand it there are fewer than usual opportunities to release Apple carrier bundles this year than there have been in the past so it has been tricky to get all the switches ready to flick.

If only the answer as to when Samsung will release the update for the S7/S7 Edge to support this was as simple as the one above re: Apple!

Will Warehouse Mobile (as a 2degrees MVNO) be able to use the Wifi calling feature? I asked them and they didn't know.

@saltynz can you perhaps narrow it to the nearest ‘quarter’ year?

Aka autumn/winter/spring this year?

The following devices are expected to be enabled for WiFi Calling via software update by the end of March 2018.This launch date is correct as at 1st March 2018.

Samsung Galaxy Note8*
Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge*
Samsung Galaxy J7 Pro*
Samsung Galaxy J3 Pro*

So if iPhones aren’t yet even ‘by the end of March’ we still a few months away?

I suspect those Samsung devices will begin to work by next software update, which should occur this month, whereas the iPhones are pending Apple to validate and authorise.

Could you also read it as an admission from 2D that its network coverage isn't too flash?  :) ,

If they can reduce the strain on their network and offer a sweetener to existing 2 Degrees Broadband customers then ultimately everyone benefits even in areas with good coverage.

Looks like the WiFi Calling page on the 2degrees website was updated on Friday with details of the iPhone launch.

The following devices are expected to be enabled for WiFi Calling via an over the air settings update by the middle of April 2018. This launch date is correct as at 9th March 2018.

  • iPhone X
  • iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
  • iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
  • iPhone 6s and 6s Plus
  • iPhone 6 and 6 Plus
  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone 5s.

I wonder how this works in areas of poor quality wifi?

My current employer has a powerful cisco 802.11AC network which is hobbled by hosting hundreds of users in the building, and having perverse throttling on the backhaul so that just 2mbps is available.

In this case I DON'T want my calls using wifi.
