All good here, but then I have given up on Orcon and joined Telecom. Cutover happened on Monday and haven't looked back since.

WoW is actually more playable now (hoorah!), even though latency jumps anywhere from 250 to 600ms. So thanks I guess. But Ventrilo is causing issues.

I don't get DC'd, I just get lengthy silence and then after around 1 minute everything comes in at once, from all users, like a crowded bus of people talking over each other.

The Ventrilo server is based in Brisbane, Australia apparently - I'll post some stats later tonight if I remember, otherwise on the weekend.

should be sweet if its a aussie server usally its just anything in los angeles servers that get poor performance but the last couple nights things have been good, they must of got a new bandwidth upgrade or done something right.

Ignore my Ventrilo issue posted above :)

After a little digging, the vent issue is related to Windows 7 xx-bit, and inbound audio streaming (or something like that). GG for Microsoft not having a fix but I do have a supposed workaround to try.
Easily enough "they" say to change the shortcut properties to 'run as admin' and 'run in XP compatibility mode' ... lols @ Win7.
I thought it was strange as the lag and incoming chatter at once was paired with a vent ping of 50-70ms with NO spikes =\.

(I'm in Win7 Ult 64-bit).

What to do while I wait for my Ubuntu system to complete an update (18kB/s from UK repository launchpad.net)? I know! I'll sign up to GeekZone at long last and add my own winge and moan about Orcon's crappy service.

If only I had known that Orcon would be even ****tier than XNet!!! There's DEGRADED BROADBAND PERFORMANCE DURING PEAK HOURS ON STANDARD ORCON BROADBAND PLANS -- no **** sherlock! Going to do anything about it? Nah. The important thing is that the customer, who is paying over their hard-earned income for that 18kB/s, knows that Orcon knows their service is rubbish as well. They may as well have said "FROM NOW UNTIL SOME TIME IN THE FUTURE WHEN IT SUITS US YOU'LL GET REALLY CRAPPY SERVICE FROM US", at least then no-one would be under any delusions that there was some problem that needed actual fixing.

But wait! I should log a call with the Orcon service desk! Because the best use of MY time is spent helping them confirm that the reason I get REALLY CRAPPY INTERNATIONAL BANDWIDTH DURING PEAK TIMES is not REALLY caused by my own equipment conspiring to make them look bad.

Well kids, of course I logged a call. Do these tests, they said. I pointed out that it was extremely unlikely that the root cause of the REALLY CRAPPY INTERNATIONAL BANDWIDTH DURING PEAK TIMES issue I was trying to COMPLAIN about was far more likely to do with the unresolved DEGRADED BROADBAND PERFORMANCE DURING PEAK HOURS ON STANDARD ORCON BROADBAND PLANS which they've failed to rectify or even update. Especially as I seem to only experience problems during peak time. You know, when I'm home.

So I pinged and I tracerouted, and I SpeedTested, and unplugged and replugged and provided them with my perfectly good ADSL router configuration and very respectable line quality stats.

"OH!", they said, "we can see it now. The problem isn't with your equipment after all. It must be the DEGRADED BROADBAND PERFORMANCE DURING PEAK HOURS ON STANDARD ORCON BROADBAND PLANS that's causing the REALLY CRAPPY INTERNATIONAL BANDWIDTH DURING PEAK TIMES problem you've reported. FACEPALM! How could we be SO STUPID! We're really sorry for WASTING not only your money, but your time as well. We'll get right on to fixing the actual problem immediately. And thanks too for reminding us that we haven't updated the issue on our web site in a month, we'll do that RIGHT now."

Of course you know by now I have a habit of segueing into complete fiction. How do you know? Because you, having read through so very many posts in this long and winding thread, know full well that the very idea that Orcon would front up and acknowledge their responsibilities to their customers MUST be a work of pure fiction.

If you're interested in hearsay....

General word on the street is that Orcon is over subscribed with heavyish users.

Also Kordia (Orcon's owner) needs/wants Orcon to make a profit this year unlike the previous few years of operating losses.

Basically I wouldn't expect customer vs international bandwidth ratio to increase much any time soon.

Last night around 10pm international traffic was probably the worst I have seen it for ages. I was getting 0.26mb download and 0.66 upload to SF using speedtest.

Absolutely shocking.

Not impressed with Orcon speed etc at the moment either, I am not a gamer so there isnt that reason for being peeved, it is just the overall degradation in what used to be a premium service.
