BarTender:

The issue with Speedtest and Static IPs is it does depend on if the Static IPs are regional or national.

If you have a x.x.x.10 in Auckland and x.x.x.11 in Invercargill as the whole subnet is global for Static IPs it is *very* hard for Speedtest and Maxmind/Google and other geolocation providers to determine where you physically are as they "tend" to lump all IPs based on a coarse range (such as /24 or /22 or even larger) to determine location.

So I think this could be a consequence of Static IPs and the way ISPs provision them. I know that is how Spark provisions them as they have their "Global Static IP Subnet" which all Static IP addresses are allocated from irrespective of the location. All of those customers get sent to the Auckland CDNs and the geo-location is tagged in Auckland even though they are in a different location. The other option would be to have geo-specific Static IPs, which is far from ideal when people move between locations and want to keep the same IP.

I concur..  static (Geolocations) become extensively labour intensive for little gain. The wider challenge is there are so many geo-location providers that scavenge and update that trying to work with one/any/all becomes fruitless too.

Nick.

I'm also one of those people that will be moving and transferring service. You'd have to pry my static IP from my cold, dead hands!

If you’ve got a static IP you’re not affected. It is business as normal...

I know. I wasn't saying otherwise...

It was in response to what @BarTender said earlier:

I think to be honest, this thread really expresses WHY 2degrees (and any ISP) would be foolish to issue a large scale public statement on these sort of changes.

The users of this forum are much more likely to be informed regarding technology, and yet here we are in this monstrous thread filled with odd posturing and ill-informed people.

Just for further anecdote, I actually tried to convince my previous employer to PLEASE drop the Static IP check-box from the residential sign-up form, because it was causing so much confusion with new customers. It's just not something you want to be advertising up front, in my opinion.

Anything I say is the ramblings of an ill informed, opinionated so-and-so, and not representative of any of my past, present or future employers, and is also probably best disregarded.

Long time customer, short time behind the CGNAT.

Honestly pretty unhappy about this, I've been singing the praises of 2degrees for years to friends and family and recommending them any chance I can get when someone's looking for recommendations.

I run a number of services from home, databases, TTN LoRa Gateway, webhooks for IoT devices, Plex Media server and a few low traffic websites, and honestly I should have gotten a static IP years ago. However, with a solid DDNS setup provided by Cloudflare I never felt like it was worth it.

Really would have been nice to know that everything would suddenly change out from underneath me, I can understand why 2degrees would make this change, and the average Joe won't even notice but us more technical customers obviously aren't very happy about this. I guess it would have been difficult for 2degrees to contact people individually without freaking out the general public.

Likely won't be leaving 2dgrees but it's going to be a lot harder to recommend them now, grumble...

I'm guessing that part of this may have been directed at me with my previous random commentary. Apologies for the slight derailment if that's the case.

So, I have been using Dyndns for years so I can VPN into home from work, useful when I wants to transfer files between my work machine and my home backup

VPN has stopped, I have not used it for a week or two...

Check my settings and my Fritzbox says my IPv4 address: 100.66.184.181

DynDns says it is 118.149.166.22 (logged into the web site to check my settings and expiry of my account which is OK)

So...is this the results of CGNAT ?

And no I am not a networking person, I know enough to do some basics for my home needs (enough to be dangerous..lol).

So any info/ideas would be useful

Yeah, you're behind the CGNAT now.

Yes: 100.66.184.181 is in the CGNAT range

No: Your DynDNS should have updated, unless they reject CGNAT ranges I guess.  Depends on your DynDNS client as to why it hasnt.

To get your VPN working again you'll need a public IP address and not one behind CGNAT.

I am presuming that dyndns.org is picking up the gateway address for the CGNAT

So conversation with 2degrees and its $10.40 per month for a fixed IP.

I object to paying this to fix something 2Degrees has broken , something I have been using for quite a number of years.

I would prefer them to take away the Amazon Prime.

You can try sending a message to 2degreesCare to ask if they can help out. If not you can vote with your wallet by moving ISPs.

Did you mention that you needed a static IP as a result of CGNAT? I had to make it clear that I wouldnt be paying the fee due to the changes made.

I've got my fixed IP yesterday, after being switched to CGNAT on Sunday late night.

I think there are a few keywords you could use, like: surveillance (cameras, alarm), climate control, etc.
