Foo: Any idea of VDSL coverage in Wellington if Fibre isn't due to run out for at least a couple of years? Would love to get VDSL connected, but looking at the Chorus coverage map, we're right on the edge of VDSL availability

Would you mind explaining what those extra charges are, given that the base price is the same?

I was hoping to get VDSL as an interim step until fibre eventually reaches me, but at that premium I won't be. I find it a bit strange that it costs more than the equivalent fibre.

Not sure of the specifics (that's above my pay grade) but I'm told there's an extra fee added from them to offset the price of installation.

Sorry to keep flogging a dead horse, but what install costs?

If it is master splitter etc at the home, then in my case that's done. If it is at the cabinet end, could there be an option for the customer to pay that rather than an ongoing monthly fee?

I ask as other ISPs VDSL offerings appear to be either the same price (e.g. WXC) or a $5/month premium (e.g. SNAP).

I'm sure that others who are years away from fibre would like to get VDSL via Slingshot's better network as well, due to the fact that Chorus in the vast majority of cases isn't offering it at all.

Have a quick compare of the modem costs for VDSL.

I think you can get SNAP down to around $275 on a 12 month plan (free on a 24). I couldn't find WXCs modem cost, but the above stated VDSL modem cost of $20 for slingshot might make that $5 premium a little easier to swallow.

Slingshot: No word on Naked plans. However you can change to VDSL/Fibre without penalty although you will be put on a new 12 month contract.

Couple of related questions:

What would the termination fee be?
What would happen once the naked plans come out and I wanted to switch to those? Would that invoke that fee and/or a new contract term?

From my understanding Chrous are super keen to do a splitter install with every VDSL connection so they're not charging providers that every time. Instead they've added a bit to the price we pay 'em for the service. That charge is passed to us regardless of wether the house already has a splitter installed. Other than that there is the fact that unmaimed pointed out that we're discounting the modems quite heavily. I'm not really involved with setting the prices so I'm just spitballing here.

Termination fee is $199. Once there are naked plans out you should get charged for changing to them. You'll likely be put in a fresh contract but there shouldn't be a charge to switch.

Yes actually, well spotted. So to clarify, changing from one service to another (clothed/naked adsl -> UFB and between UFB services) will not incur a charge but you will be put on a new contract. *proof reads* yeah that's right :)

So no discounts at all, if you have a splitter, and provide your own VDSL gear?
