i agreed with redkea.
well the reason i posted here is orcon helpdesk does not work for me. everytime i call them up, they want me to do the same boring line test process. Give me a ticket number and never get back to me!

Alternatively i make my comments/complaints here.
i'm pretty sure orcon staff members read this thread.
if ORCON had provided a decent service, this thread wouldn't have reached 18th page :/

these international performance issues have been known for months. I now left with no choice and will leave orcon. too bad i gotta wait till the end of the month.

Agreed. I may have even forgiven their speed issues if they had decent customer service. But the only thing worse than Orcon's international connection performance is their customer service. They don't keep us updated, their faults department never get back to you. They don't offer any sort of compensation. They are the worst ISP in NZ at the moment, would be pretty stupid to remain with them. Think I will give Vodafone a shot.

I really don't get it. I have downloaded 70GB in the last two weeks.

Sometimes I get up to 950KB/s depending on the server.

I don't use online gaming so I don't have those problems but it seems quite OK to me.

In the interests of full disclosure, I just had a great download experience with Orcon. Wel, great compared with what I've had for a long time.

I first downloaded the "Meet the Press" audio podcast from MSNBC, and it plodded along at the usual 80 KBPS, o start with, levelling off at about 45 KBPS, which is pretty normal.

But then, I downloaded the "This Week" audio podcast from ABC in the US, and was getting over 500 KBPS, which is very unusual.

Interesting.

What time was that though? I have no issues other than between 6-11pm when the connection begins to crawl.

Mauricio has a very valid point here guys. “Once upon a time”, I was adamant a particular issue a mate was having was a ISP service problem when in actual fact it was a filter issue that cause all sorts of weird and wonderful things to occur at the site in question. Oops - very embarrassing for me

However, I will say this: my house is two years old – actually, I think the subdivision is only three or four years old at the most. I live a couple hundred meters from the cabinet (that allegedly is connected back to the exchange by fibre?). ALL of the cabling from the splitter is cat 5e (even the phone wiring). I’m fairly certain that two splitters can’t be at fault (yes, I have a few spares). I have replaced my modem (I have spares of those too). Basically everything is relatively new! I had also bypassed the firewall at one point. And isolated or eliminated all sorts of other things that could be the issue.

The issue I’m getting are exactly the same as everyone else here. Many exhibits of a particular issue over many locations turn in to a service issue – not a CP or CPE issue.

The point? the amount of hours I’ve spent to find out the issue wasn’t mine was quite substantial but it needed to be done. At the very least, so I don’t blame someone for a problem that could be mine.

I tried to watch the video podcast Meet The Press on my Popcornhour yesterday and gave up after continual buffering then play 30 for seconds etc.

Mauricio may have a valid point if it was only one person complaining about the ISP in question. However, there are lots of people complaining about the same problems with the same ISP.

Wouldn't it be too much of a coincidence if everyone here suddenly developed a problem that wasn't the fault of the ISP.

I also live in a house less than two years old, and have tested everything I can test, and I'm not going to buy another router/modem just to prove that the ISP is at fault.

Since the night of the debacle (and not even being able to access standard web pages two hours prior to job actually starting), I haven't even tried the internet at home, so haven't even commented on whether it has improved or not. From what I've read today, there's not much to look forward to.

I haven't had a chance to retest my Ventrilo problem but will do so in the next few days.

On that issue posting "I'm only getting ...." to xyz site at the moment is probably not that helpful. There's a lot of other parties involved in getting your packets from here to there.

To make any testing useful you need to be downloading the same files / data from the same place off-peak and then on-peak. or to be testing the Traffic shaping issue, different files types from the same site on-peak and off-peak. (recording the results as you go)

I'd also encourage everyone to submit any issues (with facts, stats, logs) since the "bandwidth upgrade" via the "Submit Ticket" option on the Orcon site. Whilst it hasn't produced a useful response in the past, I think we still need to be reporting our problems via the official way and can't expect them to be monitoring the forum 24/7. Any tickets we submit also add to the "monthly statsistics" of incidents.

We are Orcon customers off the Ponsonby exchange and still experiencing intermittent slow/non existant international download speeds.

Hi guys,

Apologies for not being around on Friday or over the weekend to answer the questions that were coming in. I will try to address all of the questions to the best of my ability, anything that I am unable to answer I will have to ask Thomas to pitch in.

Firstly, the bandwidth upgrade obviously did not go as smoothly as planned (Thomas doesn't stay up to 5am for fun - mostly), I am sure that many of you working in the IT sector can sympathise with this kind of thing happening. I posted up an estimated time that the work was happening in the hopes that full disclosure would keep you guys happy, however this seems as though it was a mistake in hindsight judging by peoples reaction when the work was delayed.

That aside, the bandwidth upgrade is now complete and some of you are clearly experiencing much better performance.

It also sounds like some people are not experiencing improved performance. This would suggest that there are other issues in the mix. The tricky situation we now have is that we have no idea whether the people posting here are on our own network (Orcon+ unbundled network), or on the Telecom wholesale network. There is a big difference in the degree to which we can affect a speed incease for end users on the Orcon+ network vs. the wholesale network.

Any of this kind of information that you can provide us when logging fault tickets will help us to diagnose and fix these problems where we are able to. There are some instances where we are not able to help - e.g. if you are on a wholesaled broadband connection and your exchange is congested - Orcon can not do anything about that aside from complain to Telecom, which we certainly do.

Please understand that when we ask you to provide details that we are not just doing it for a laugh, we genuinely need to see this information so that we are able to diagnose and fix problems on the network. There is a large amount of this that we are able to do at a high level, but for individual problems we need to see the individual line stats, and to do that we need your co-operation.

Re: Layer 7 traffic management appliance. I have been very open about what we use this for. But for the benefit of those who have not read one of my posts about it, we use it to prioritise traffic. The heirarchy goes: 1) Web (http), latency sentsitive (VoIP, gaming, streaming video) 2) Email 3) P2P. This means that during peak bandwidth use times P2P will be restricted in order to allow priority 1 traffic to continue to run at full speed (or as close as possible).

Try gaming with Orcon currently and you'll find something is not right! I have been with Orcon for a long time and have had superb service consistent speeds and ping. Since they started introducing ADSL2 something has gone terribly wrong with Orcons International bandwidth speed while gaming. I run two Gaming Servers out of Chicago with VOIP Teamspeak2. I know what my normal ping and latency should be when all is well. My ping should be 200ms -210ms but since Orcon's problems I am at 250ms - 270ms. Either this problem is something Orcon have yet to fix or they are throttling my bandwidth with Traffic Management which is something that is not in my Orcon contract on the MAX/MAX plan. When I do a speedtest (www.speedtest.net) you will notice it stop and start and not burst and flow consistently like it used to. I also noticed it thinks I'm situated in Christchurch? I'm in Hamilton! Has Orcon re-routed us through Christchurch Servers? This is also something new that Orcon have not explained to me? I never used to show this little green human figure in Christchurch.... it has changed recently...WHY?

So last night for the first time since I've had Age of Conan, I didn't get a single 10,000ms ping lag spike during peak hour. Had a great constant 220-280ms. When I did speedtest.net tests to USA, they were all around 8mbps instead of the usual >1mbps.

Did something happen? Problem resolved? I signed up with Xnet and now I wonder if I should call and cancel and stick with Orcon after all. Maybe give it one more day.
