That can be alleviated by having the map app download the map info for the journey before beginning, but obviously not everything is planned nor thought of beforehand (certainly not by me in my ramshackle life! :-) ), and 128Kbps ain't gonna cut it in every area, I have to admit :-) I recall one trip across four U.S. states last time I was over there exhausted my local companion's data allowance near the end, as the map app grabbed local maps and map info everywhere we passed nearby. We should have thought to save the trip's maps first while at their place on WiFi.

How would an email to SMS gateway deal with emails that have more than 160 characters in them? It sounds like it would be a mess. Even if it was supported.

If you just want to send SMS from a computer. The 2d Usb modem I had (can't remember which model sorry) came with a page inside it's management software that allowed you to send and receive SMS.

Well when I send an email longer than 160 characters to a U.S. friend, the email's text is broken up into multiple SMS messages, which is simple and effective.
