Just a heads up on speed testing: Our LA speed tester can currently only achieve ~7.7Mbps per test.

It's to do with only being configured to run two threads, and the effect of latency on throughput.

We're working with Ookla to get this addressed to give you a better idea of international speeds.

I sent a PM to the Slingshot account (no reply just yet), but can we tweak the SNR margin?

Alternatively, if we cannot will Slingshot techs tweak the value for us at the VDSL card in the cabinet (upon customer request) to a lower value if our line is stable?

For example, I think that Chorus's 12db SNRM is too high for my ADSL2+ line.
I think 6-9 would be a better value.

What a joke. Slingshot won't get fibre installed in rental properties. Even with written consent from the owners.

IMO that is fair enough with the extreme hassle that rentals and multi units bring because of stupid laws about consent etc.

If they can get the easy ones knocked off first it makes the platform more profitable sooner.

How is it a hassle. It's not a multi-dwelling unit or a shared property. It's a house just like any other. I've talked to the landlords and explained exactly what would happen. They're happy (actually quite excited themselves) and said they'd write/sign whatever it is that is needed.

The reason given is that once fibre is installed that means it's fibre for life. Well ok while I can see how that can become a problem, but, this country is only going one way and that is forward. It's going to have to happen at some point.

He also said, you're locked into a 12 month contract so if you moved out you'd be stuck with paying it out. Well i'm pretty sure I've been locked into other contracts by you for 12 months before. Hasn't phased me in the past and I know the risks of cancelling.

I'm just as unlikely to move from these premises as the people who own their own property. I'm extremely annoyed by this. I've tried to be patient. I've waited 2.5 years since SS first announced fibre just for it to be thrown out.

While it is fine for you in your situation, a majority of rentals are thru agents which makes getting any consent done a major hassle with absent landlords and ones going thru holding companies etc so are not so straightfoward.

If they can get a few 100 hassle free installs done first then open it up to rentals etc then it will make it easier for all involved.

I understand where they're coming from, but I'd much rather it be done on a case by case basis. If the tenant/landlord can agree and come up with consent then all good start organizing the installation.

To be fair, he did say they would be reviewing the policy some time after christmas. So I'm hoping i'm only a month or so away.

EDIT: I'm also slightly confused. It doesn't really have much to do with SS? Surely for an installation they just log a job with Chorus who do it?

The ISP ends up as a go between in the following chain:

Property owner <-> property manager <-> Tenant <-> ISP <-> Chorus <-> chorus contractor.

Sounds like hell.

why dont you just lie and tell them that you're the owner, they wont know. just make sure you get something written from the owner and keep it as proof you do in fact have permission to do what you're doing

You could, however, do it as the owner's agent and representative, which would be true provided that the owner agreed to appoint you in that role for this purpose.

Easier though to just do a side deal with the owner where they get the connection and account installed and you agree to pay for it until the contract period expires and then you transfer the connection into your name.

not really, you still legally have permission from the owner, you're just giving the ISP and chorus one less thing to worry about if you can sort all that out yourself.
