In the last 15 mins international connectivity suddenly kicked back in. From literally timeouts everywhere for anything non-NZ to everything just working fine.

casewindow: I'm experiencing the worst international connectivity I have ever had with Orcon at the moment - is anyone else having the same? NZ websites & email are fine - but gmail/hotmail and any international sites (facebook, speedtest.net etc.) are virtually unreachable???

Everything is running great for me ever since the international upgrade last week.

Same thing is happening again tonight - international just went down the toilet in the last 30 mins. NZ sites are fine but anything related to international is almost impossible to use :(

Seeing the same thing here in Wellington. Around 15Kb/s to update some Ubuntu packages from a UK server.

I think it's time we considered upgrading our Orcon broadband Internet service to something with a bit more performance. Can anyone recommend a reliable ISP that has support for full 56kbps dial-up? Anything above 48kbps would be great, as long as it's $70 a month or less. Honest replies only please, I don't want to be stuck with yet another ISP telling me that I agreed to the Terms and Conditions, and the only reason I'm only getting 20kps is because because I haven't done enough diagnostic tests, and that their supplier is mean and won't let them have the full 56kbps, and that their really sorry and understand that it's frustrating, but thanks for keeping up your end of the deal by paying your bill, while all the while running a massive television advertising campaign so they give even less service to even more people. I'd really hate that.

lol mine line only did 50kbps!!! it was a real upgrade from 28800 modem.

some say you should be satisfied getting 2 out 3. The 3 being price, speed and traffic.

with orcon i'm hopefully getting price (for $/GB) and speed. Since speed is not really happening recently, so I come here to vent a bit.

I don't think NZ is getting the "traffic" part at all, so it should be affordable and rather quick.

Alas, I remember utilising 1% of my income to get 10Mbps/1Mbps in UK, it was quick and surely unlimited. It was definitely pricey though, as my colleagues wouldn't pay above half of what I was paying. I wonder how many % of our pay are we paying for NZ internet? I think it's a lot more than 1% for me right now, I call it my NZ premium.

btw, Orcon really do have good service once they focused their attention, my line has been pretty good tonight, no congestion and no buffering to youtube.

1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.1
2 14 ms 13 ms 15 ms lo1-ubs.erx1.nct.orcon.net.nz [60.234.8.199]

not bad.

I always post the fastest server on the west coast, as to minimize the effect of US local congestion, since I'm testing the route between Takapuna and wherever the site is on the west coast of USA.

It definitely feels a bit slow on the video/radio/gaming front, the pings in the last up in the 800's, but I can't find any secondary evidence for it (ie, speedtests/tracert's/etc... are all fine for me, whether or not it feels laggy). Been that way past couple of days later at night. I'd guess around when their international bandwidth purchases run dry perhaps.

Been okay for the past month or two until the last few days too.

Aside from that comment, one thing I'm wondering about that might only be a little related... Am I just watching more TV lately or does Orcon have a lot more advertising going on? Doesn't seem like the best idea if your international bandwidth can't handle the current customer base...
