Pleas bear in mind I haven't really done any serious WiFi or LAN stressing yet - i.e significant streaming or copying, so others may have more to report on that front.

On the plus side, I don't have to reboot it every day or so unlike previous branded devices I have paid a lot more than $30 for!

I'm going through that right now with my current model, though in the last week its more like every few hours. Excited for this new one now!

I swapped to Bigpipe who have a VDSL plan for $99/m naked. (speeds are much better too)

I just signed up for the Slingshot Unlimited Plus VDSL and I was wondering for those who have it what modem they got with it? For $30 I'm a little worried it will be terrible

So I ordered an Asus DSL-66u from Amazon.co.uk (had vouchers to use) and I got family bringing it to me in a month or so.

Nowt wrong with the default modem for the money, but the WiFi performance isn't cutting it.

Have had VDSL up and running for maybe 15 days now. Pretty disappointed with the upgrade to be honest, went from 18/1 sync speeds to 23/5 with 11db line attenuation.

Not sure if the tech that did the install just did a poor job or just how it goes. Currently running alot of "LCD" errors

True speeds are only up by about 3mbit..

And speedtest.net shows my "location" as the top of the south island, is that normal ?

Having 11db isn't good to start with, you're basically at the limit for where VDSL can be supplied. Your speeds look fine, have friends with same attenuation and they get 20~/6.5. Next option would be to wait for UFB if or when it is released in your area to get better speed increases.

Today Chorus arrived and fitted VDSL. It took four hours for them to install and then uninstall and install again as the attenuation rose from 17 to 32, download from 15 to 10, upload from 1.1 to 300k.

They swapped out all the hardware (except the router) and tried again. Same issue.

Finally discovered that i was too far from the cabinet. Dunno the distance, but somewhere in the 1.2 - 1.5km range.

I knew this beforehand as I'd checked with Chorus. However, SS insisted VDSL was going to be ok and so I went ahead.

Chorus guys left a bit miffed at 6.30pm as they wanted to return me to ADSL but could not as Telecom had gone home (they said). Waitangi Day tomorrow. They said they'd look at my cabinet connection on Friday and make a final decision.

The most annoying thing is that I'm just a few hundred metres from the cabinet but the wiring goes all over the show before it gets there.

Just thought I'd share this - the point I guess i want to make is that Ss should be more assured that a house is within range before they offer VDSL.

I still don't see anything on the website about a naked VDSL plan - has anyone been able to arrange this, or has everyone gone with a bundle (I would have to buy a phone?!)

I am literally across the street from the local cabinet, and it says my address is in range - just hate to think I have to pay for a phone line I don't need.

Attenuation (0.1 dB):

down and up

and Copper Loop(kft):6.5

Does this seem odd given my exchange is literally across the street? Very long loop?

Chorus website still estimates June 2014 for Fibre to become available at my house (despite the cabling to the bottom of our driveway already being done), so do you guys think there is any chance of being able to go onto VDSL until Fibre becomes available and then switching to the UFB plans without incurring big money break costs?

just wait for the fibre, i think if you're moving from VDSL to UFB within one ISP they dont usually charge you ETF's but just wait in case you decide you want to choose a different ISP instead ;)

Ok. Here is what is happening with me after I switched over from Slingshot ADSL to VDSL.

I was on a 40GB ADSL plan and I had signed up for the VDSL 200GB plan. My swtich over to VDSL went as planned during the month of Feb 2014. I noticed that I was still on the 40GB plan after the switchover. The My Account section online said that my broadband plan change was requested and the change over will take place on 4th March. I thought ok, perhaps they will put me on the 200GB plan on 4th of March when my billing month rolls over. Nothing happened on the 4th of March. I went to the My Account section online and checked to see if I need to manually switch over my plan, but no, there it said that my broadband plan change has been requested and the plan will change on 4th April !!! What???

I called up Slingshot on 4th March and told them about this issue and the CSR said that he will escalate the issue and the 'other team' will fix this for me. I asked him how long will it take. He said if it hasn't switched over in 2 days I can call again to find out what's happening. I thought oh ok then. On 6th March still nothing. I waited all day and then in the evening, I called again. This CSR said that I need to wait till 4th April. I lost it and protested strongly. I asked him why should I wait till 4th April when my plan change had been requested in Feb? I asked him to check my VDSL order and he admitted that indeed the plan change to 200GB was requested in Feb. But he still kept on insisting that I need to wait till 4th April. After a lot of argument he said it could happen 'sooner'. After probing what 'sooner' meant, he said upto 2 weeks. Again after some argument he changed his statement to 10 days. I told him on his face that he is trying to fob me off and this is absolutely useless customer service on his part.

I also asked him during the many arguments what would happen if my 40GB data was used up by me in the meantime? He said I will be slowed to dial up speeds. I told him this is a big joke that for no fault of mine, I will be either slowed down or will be forced to buy their costly data blocks. He couldn't care less. He basically was not interested in taking any responsibility of this issue.

He was not ready to do anything about it and was very stubborn. I had to literally force him to send the 'other team' a reminder and ask them to hurry things up. He finally put me on a long hold and came back and said he had done it (which I somehow doubt).

All said and done, I am SO PISSED OFF with Slingshot's useless customer service that I am seriously looking at moving away to some other ISP who are known to provide really good customer service. I know I will be charged a penalty by Slingshot, but now I have no choice.

I am writing this so that anyone who is thinking of moving to Slingshot or wanting to upgrade to VDSL, should think 10 times before taking the plunge. Do it at your own risk. I am regretting already.

If they haven't put you on the plan yet then you can't be on a term contract yet.
