Just called a friend on his vodafone mobile from my mobile using 2 degrees and the voice audio is crystal clear. I also call a friend my my 2 degrees mobile to fixed line connection and the audio is crystal clear.

Are you in an area where 2Degrees has VoLTE active? I believe areas where it is will give great call quality, but little old Auckland where I live doesn't have it yet :-(

Lower Hutt my phone has not got VOLTE both voice calls over 3G.

@Spong Yes VoLTE is live North of Puhoi for some Android handsets I am using a 2degrees sold Samsung S20+

Only today I have noticed calls off-net with good call quality! Before today VoLTE calls off-net were still very poor quality (sounded like sock over phone)

I've had three calls today:

2D Unknown (South Auckland) but probably 3G-> VFNZ VoLTE  - crystal clear, best I've heard for a while.

2D VoWIFI -> VFNZ 3G - Average quality but on lower side of the scale

2D 3G (Wellington)-> VFNZ 3G - Average quality but ok.

@Spong 3G calls on 2degrees to 2d are AMR-WB (HD) but I am sure calls going cross carrier were not WB-AMR

Why is the call quality so variable? Today had a 3G (Hillsborough) to VFNZ VoLTE and the quality was so poor, I could barely make out the other party (and vice versa).

Aren't you lucky, Linux, living in a 2d VoLTE coverage area? :)

I thought I was imagining that the call quality had suddenly got really bad on 2degrees until I came across this thread.

I am on Skinny (Spark) and my other half is on 2degrees and when we talk on the phone it is shocking and my misses thought I was just been to picky and that there was a issue with my phone, as when she rings her mum or grandmother who are both 2D it works fine. So for once a man was right and was able to prove it was not all in my geeky head, so thanks for that everyone 😂😜

It gets so bad here in Tauranga at times I miss whole sentences to drop outs, it sounds like you have like -120dbm signal when to starts playing up.

Rest assured 2d is working with SparkNZ and VodafoneNZ to get IP interconnect setup for higher quality calls cross-network

Got me beat why some of these mobile operators haven't announced a 3G switch off date. All mobile operators in the US have specified when 3G will be switched off.

All handsets sold should be VOLTE capable.

3G switch off can't come fast enough! if I could lock my handset to 4G only I would

Correct Verizon Wireless in the US has banned new 3G devices from being connected to its network for over a year now. And I note the majority of RCG cellsites are VOLTE only for voice.  And this 3G spectrum can be re-used for 4G and 5G.

Lucky you can get 4G. I can only get 3G at -104dB from a Spark tower in Aotea, Porirua.

Someone discovered a webpage on Spark's website nearly 12 months ago discussing VoWIFI but since taken down, can only assume Covid delayed it. Also Vodafone are working on it to launch this year.
