Linux:

@Mahon Not correct as 3G offers HD calling as well

That is good to know. That may put call quality back where it once was!!

cheers

@Mahon interconnect calls have never been WB-AMR

I have 2 pools consisting of 6 mobiles split across 2 degrees and VFNZ.

The call quality issue has meant that one of two on the 2D pool have asked to be switched over to the Vodafone pool. If this doesn’t get resolved soon, I’m inclined to grant them that request now that there is no price difference between the 2D and Voda pool plans.

I’ve personally had calls (VF <-> 2D) where I can barely make out the other parties even though both devices are in excellent coverage. I don’t quite understand why sometimes it can be ok quality and then absolute poor call quality.

I hope this isn’t another case of artificial throttling like what happened on 2D national roaming a wee while back.

No zero relation to the artificial throttling that was happening with national roaming not even close considering how much bandwidth a call uses

Edit: Further to this national roaming is almost a dead duck as it is anyway with the MoRAN project

I realise that there is no relation but let’s just say, it took a little bit of pressure for 2D to admit that they were throttling and even then, there was a bit of spin.

I hope that this isn’t the case here (eg. On the transcoding front). The reason why is that I can’t remember off net calls being this bad in audio quality in the past.

The issue is SS7 links do not support HD calling so the links need to be changed over to IP and this is in process now

Yes but I think what is being questioned here is that the SS7 links have been in place for a long time and only recently had call quality issues.

So what has changed for this to be an issue now, as opposed to a seamless upgrade to IP with only improvements.

Correct. This has only been getting worse over the last few months.
It has been really Interesting sitting back watching this thread as it seems like it’s a much bigger issue than what's being portrayed by network engineers.

i'm lucky I use my warehouse mobile (using the 2 degrees network) and never have a problem. Making outgoing calls to landlines and friends on Kogan mobile (vodafone network) audio is crystal clear over 3G.

Just had a call from someone at work and could not even make out what they were saying.

I don't make or get calls much but i expect to be able to hear / understand them.  Have notice this over the last month or so.  I was thinking my hearing was just getting bad.

@ajw The issue is cross net call quality and it will be the same for 2d and WH mobile users

I've spoken to 2D Customer Care and they're keen to get some examples of this. Can a few of us raise also raise faults with 2D with:

Date/time of call, 2 Degrees Phone number, Offnet Phone number, Offnet telco.

I'm in the process of doing a few test calls and will be logging a few examples myself over the coming days.

They don't need examples the NOC have already looked into this!

I have already provided examples to the 2d NOC over a week ago

This is not a fault until all the interconnect links are IP it is how it is

You seem pretty certain of that but why then do Voda / Spark internetwork calls not sound bad? Do they have IP interconnect?
