And in news just in, provisioning has been turned on. If you have an S8 and you've turned on the service in the settings, you should see it activate any time now.

@SaltyNZ Thanks for the update, How can you tell on the handset when service is provisioned and up and running?

Can't see anything different on the S8+

If you look at the screenshots I posted a couple of pages back, you'll see the Wifi symbol has a little handset icon attached to it. Apparently also if you have previously had the switch turned on you might need to restart the phone, as it will by now have decided it is turned off and won't try it again immediately.

There is more info at http://2dm.co.nz/wificalling.

When you leave a WiFi area with an active WiFi call your call will not hand over to mobile and will drop.

That's a shame. Is that a phone specific issue or is cellular handoff not supported at the network level?

You’re not just handing over to cellular, you’re switching between two completely separate domains - VoWifi is VoIP based on IMS, and 2/3G cellular are based on TDM circuit switching. Thus, handover between those domains is extremely difficult so nobody does it.

Handover to VoLTE, on the other hand, is less difficult because you remain within the IMS domain. Even then, however, it requires some additional support to ensure continuity (note I said less difficult, not easy).

Thus why I cheekily asked if you're launching VoLTE too, as there are some similar fundaments between VoWiFi and VoLTE.

Very cool feature. One thing I’m curious about is whether low (or nil) cell signal will still cause extra battery drain, even when connected to the network through WiFi Calling?

It could yes more battery to maintain the cellular signal, just put it on aeroplane mode and activate wireless, saves a lot of battery at home where there isn’t any cellular.

VoLTE is coming eventually, of course. All the RBI2 JV sites are currently planned to be LTE-only, for example, so VoLTE will be the only way to make a phone call on them for any cellular provider. But I can't give any time frames.

Ok so I can't ask when VoLTE is likey coming; but I'm sure I'm allowed to ask when the first RBI2 towers are suppose to start building?
