I have an issue that is really bizarre and no one seems to be able to fix it.
It has spanned two houses now as I have recently moved and the issue has persisted.
Just today Chorus was around here and confirmed what I have known all along.

My line is fine, my cabinet is fine I get around 18MBPS from each to the provider.
I can speedtest to the Orcon server in Auckland at around 15-16MBPS and that is where it ends

If I run the same speedtest to any overseas server my speed falls through the floor, I consider a "good" day at the moment if I hit 4MBPS. but it is usually around 2MBPS or less.

What the hell is causing this and why is it so hard for them to fix it?

In addition to this problem every few days the international connection just shuts down. Between 10pm and 1am and taking anywhere from an hour through to the rest of the night to resolve itself. Rebooting the modem does not help.

When this happens I can open New Zealand sites although they take ages to load but nothing international will work for me.

This tells me the problem has to be somewhere on the international link at Orcon and since there isn't another 1000 people screaming about this its probably only me with the issue.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It's not just you. I've had this issue as well, and to be honest I've just stopped caring about it. Most discussions with Orcon customer service are just a waste of time that usually result in me ending up swearing at them.

I am talking with someone fairly high up the chain at Orcon, and someone in New Zealand I might add.
I would be happy to add your issues to mine as it reinforces my case and just might help with yours.

Now I would not ask you for your isp details and expect to receive them but if you could PM me your full name they should be able to pick up the case notes from that.

I understand if you are hesitant to do this, your call.

To me I sounds like normal congestion with Orcon.
What servers are you speedtesting to what is your sydeny speedtests like compaired to LA speed test and further away.

Example Sydney:

What sort of speed do you expect to get to Los Angeles?
Do you understand how TCP works and how speed restrictions for TCP are affected by latency?

I also assume you're just using speedtest.net for testing; In which case

Do you understand how speedtest.net works?
Do you understand that speeds will vary considerably to different test locations?

I never bothered testing to Australia, as far as I know nothing I access is based there.

I have a standard test site in San Fran (Monkey Brains) one in Austin Texas (Doublehorn Communications) and another London (Namesco).

No I admit I know very little about this sort of thing.

What I do know is before this issue I was consistently testing around 10Mbps to the San Fran server and the pings in the games I play were consistent with this coming in around the 120ms mark.

Now I am lucky to get half that in speed and my ping is around 300ms or higher.

So I do not care about the abstract "this is how it is supposed to work" arguments I just want my speed and ping back to where it was.

I am not asking for miracles, I just want the service I am paying for.

Ahh that would explain the drop in speed with increase in latency you decerease the speed you can get for a single TCP stream.

There could be a number of reasons why latency has increased some will be under Orcon control and some will not.

EG:
1.) Fibre Failure and running on backup (Very rarely backups are as good as the primary)
2.) Routes in the internet have changed.
3.) Orcon has changed International Transit providers (not that im aware of)
4.) Orcon's International transit provider has routed the your destination via a non-optimal route (could be intentional or not)

Do you know the IP address of the server your connecting to? What's the traceroute look like? Is the jump in latency inside orcons network or outside in the world wide intertubes.....

What you don't realise is Fullspeed Down is not 1:1 guaranteed speeds, This has a shared contention ratio most ISP's run around 1:140 1:300 contention ratio.

Yes I know the IP
winmtr reports two significantly bad places, one is a 4000+ms hit on an address with an orcon prefix and the other is a 2000ms hit on one of the atlas.cogento.com entries.

Of course I realize that.

But dropping more than half of your speed overnight and the issue persisting for almost 2 months is not "status quo"

Are you telling me I should just accept the fact of losing half of my "normal" speed and just ignore the fact that games I enjoy are now almost unplayable?

I might add here also that Orcon have admitted that something is not right here, they just can't seem to fix it.

I see a lot of raves on Geekzone from Orcon customers about different things. The vast majority express a significant element of frustration. I am always curious about one thing. Why would you stay with Orcon? Is the price really that good?

The sheer hassle of changing is the only reason that I am giving them a chance to sort this.
With the Genius being a Naked DSL system I would have to buy a new modem and a new phone then sign up for ADSL2+ or VDSL elsewhere and a phone account with someone.

All up it would cost a small fortune and be a pain in the ass.

(but its almost at the "worth it" point)

You expect full line speed to international? That could be on the next Tui Billboard

Unless you have a SLA agreement it's best effort
