Hi all,

This is more directed at Orcon's techs but feel free to chip in.

We're currently looking at switching to Orcon from BigPipe to get a better connection speed on ADSL using the LLU equipment, our line benefits greatly from having a different ADSL profile to what Chorus offers. We know this from a previous Vodafone connection (see thread) but can't stand Vodafone's support.

Two questions we need to answer please:

  1. Do you automatically get put onto the Orcon's LLU network or does this need to be requested (we are on the Courtney Place Exchange in Wellington)?
  2. Does Orcon offer different ADSL line profiles (alternative SNR)?

Thanks

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Hi there...

If you are off the exchange, and not a cabinet, then you would be put on LLU automatically.

We can adjust the profile to suit the line quality.  Ours are generally more aggressive than Chorus'. We can also set Annex M in most cases, which gives you a bit more upstream at the expense of a small amount of downstream speed.

What kind of speeds are you getting?  Care to post your stats?  As there may be a fault at play here or a more aggressive profile may not help you at all if your line is bad/long.

Hi,

Thanks for coming back to me.

Here is a screenshot of the router stats page.

A speedtest.net is here.

We were seeing downstream speeds around 10-11mbs when we were on Vodafone equipment. Should I PM you our address?

Cheers

I would say you should not be connecting so slowly anyway, your attenuation is pretty high assuming you are not more than a kay or so from the exchange.

Do you have a master filter installed?

May I suggest you first lodge a fault with Bigpipe and get the line looked over?

Have lodged a support call with BigPipe however we are at a bit of a dead end with no result - they did a line "refresh" but that didn't do much. It hasn't gone as far as Chorus.

There is no master filter (it's an apartment complex - so anyone's guess as to what the wiring is like). We have two jack points in the place, no other equipment connected.

Well with attenuation like that, changing to LLU will only help you so much.  I suggest going back to BigPipe and see if they can get the line looked over, or if the attenuation is just normal for the distance you are from the exchange.
