Hi everyone

I'm thinking about extending the TV distribution in our house and also need to add some cabling between the roof and the ground after a recent upgrade to our satellite dish (we added dual output LNBs on D1, D2 and C1/D3). I estimate that I need roughly 50m of RG6, but I could use more than that so I thought I'd buy a reel and be done with it. Is anyone able to give some advice about the best place to buy decent quality bulk cable where I won't be charged an arm and a leg?

Visit your local electrical wholesaler. Their prices are significantly less than you'll pay at a retail store such as Jaycar/DSE, but the catch being the price you pay without an account could depend entirely on how friendly you are to the salesperson.

Not the case for Ideal Electrical in Hamilton. I went in there and they wanted $3 something + GST per metre of Belden (i think) RG6 quad shield. He then made the comment that it was cheaper the more you purchased and had an account, and gave an example of an electrician the day before purchasing 300-400m at just under $3 + GST per metre.

DSE charges $2.99 inc gst per metre for the exact same stuff and its cheaper when you buy it from them by the roll too.
Jaycar is even cheaper again.

I was extremely surprised - that electrician could've saved some money (or more likely the customer as cost of goods is often passed on).

As a retailer customer in Auckland electrical direct are cheapest I have found. I see in their testimonials there are comments from customers in PN and New Plymouth etc, so it might worth contacting them.

There might also be similar places in Wellington that would be happy to send PN that might be cheaper due to closer location.

Just googleing around I found a few websites that sell rg6 cable with f connectors in various lengths. Even with postage added on the average price worked out around $2.20 per metre.

I wouldn't necessarily believe that.

There are lots of different grades of RG6 but anything decent will carry a Sky approved stamp on it. Pay anything more than $1 per metre incl GST for a decent amount and you're being ripped off.

As to buying stuff online I'd recommend www.cablesdirect.co.nz

I bought some cheap RG6 off trademe at $49 for 100m.

I know it was probably a bad idea, but I've had no problem with the cable (the seller also threw in some cheap F-connectors that don't hold very well, but the cable's fine).

Discount on an account purchase of TPS cable is sometimes up to the high 80's depending on the state of the account and purchase volumes. Dont know if coax will get to the same amounts but I know that if I was allowed to I could make a tidy sum reselling cables bought on an associates account on trademe. But the terms of the discounts mean no resales allowed

I bought my 152m roll from Cables Direct for $140 (belden 'sky approved'). I think that's a little more than Electrical direct's pricing. All the by-metre prices I saw were ridiculous.

What I want to find, is a reasonable source for hex-crimp F-Type and belling lee connectors. Freeview Shop's prices seem to be way over the top ~$4 for one miserable crimp?

It does pay to venture off the beaten track for connectors etc. Maybe trade outlets/mastertrades etc. The common public stores like Dick Smith/Mega etc just love taking your money.

I did this with speaker cable by the way. Bought the role at discount prices, used the 50m or so that I needed and then resold the rest at a price very similar to what I paid for it all initially.

Yeah, I saw them, but I've already got a good hex crimper.

Maybe it'd work out cheaper if I just bought a compression tool and stuck with compression crimps from now on - they seem to be more common.

EDIT: Actually, Mouser (via active components) is another option that I hadn't considered. They have the F hex crimps for under $2
