I got my PlayTV today and it seems to work fine. I few comments

- when recorfding there is a slight dropout in sound when starting to record.
- I don't see any issues with black lines or anythingthing, Just installed.. updated and worked fine
- no way to reorder the channels
- yes moving channels to the main gui.. audio is broken (update of PS3 OS is needed)
- the DVB-T hardware works 100% in linux if you want to use it in linux
- EPG is like 5-6 hours only
- Quality is great.. Watching the Freeview|HD on my 52" LCD it looks great. Why can't Sky look like this?
- It good that it comes with an overlay to put onto the PS3 BT remote which I have ( i've not put it on tho incase I sell it in the furure)

The PS3 is a real multimedia workhorse and I love it.. plays 95% of my videos via uPNP from my mythtv box, TV, Games, Can't wait for the Video Service which is coming soon to NZ (well they say it is)

the only gripe I have about the PS3 is the front USB ... It only has 2 and they are at the front and I have run out... Its such a Hassel to swap them around all the time and they look ugly at the front. I'll need to get a USB Hub or 2!

and in the future the DJ Hero Turntable! The Buzz Adapters! The PS3 Eye Camera! The Joystick for flightsims.. the Arcade Joytstick with 6 buttons The PS2 Card Adapter (yes I know the new ones do't run PS2 games.. but just imagine if I did)

so .. why only 2 USB ports! the only bluetooth device's you can get are the headset and the remote!

oh .. back the the playtv.. Its great :-)

Good post, nice summary of PlayTV (still really enjoying mine over a week later!). Agreed on the USB ports, fortunately hubs work fine. I have the 4-way one that comes with Rockband, such a relief! Now have PlayTV, 2x 1 terrabyte drives, 1x PS3 remote on charge, and 1x port for flash drives, all connected at once.

Ditto to that. I have 4 USB ports on the front of my PS3 and they are all used up with Nyko IR adapter, 2 GH guitars, Sing Star mics and the PlayTV. Maybe the compromise design would be some at the front for ad hoc use (like guitars) and a couple at the back for constant use (Play TV).

As an aside I am loving the Play TV and found even when I split my UHF signal (one line goes into it goes into a DVB-T tunder and pass through to my WinTV Nova T 500 card and the other line to the Play TV) the signal is fine. So far the plan is to record TV3 as usual with GBPVR and the Nova T card and channels with AAC audio on Play TV.

As somebody pointed out to me, which seems fairly obvious, if you have a PS3 and want DVB-T reception, this is a no brainer - $140 versus at least $200 for DVB-T box and you get recording capability to boot.

Really enjoying Freeview hi def contents. Massive different over Sky digital feed through component connection to my Bravia 40inch. Not only the picture is clearer and btter contrast, but the colours look more natural compare to pinky redish Sky digital feed.

Because it was so cheap i might hang on to this even when i built my HTPC. The beauty of the ps3 is Sony will keep on releasing free enhancements and I think it will be just a matter of time before they update the firmware to support freeview's epg format.

I wish you can set livetv option on by default when playtv starts and playtv start automatically when the ps3 starts.

Yes there is a massive difference between the quality of any satellite service vs the land based service in NZ. Plus the playtv is upscalling any SD channels as well, which it does a very good job at.

Total no brainer really if you live in a DVB-T reception area, have a PS3 and don't have a set top box or a PVR yet. Drivers are available to use this hardware in Windows media centre so there's a fall back use for it even if you don't use it for the PS3.

As a future development I'd really like the PlayTV software to work with different hard ware, ie Satellite tuners. Sat TV with PlayTV's interface and upscaling ability would be awesome.

It does seem to be a sensible add-on for a PS3 owner who wants a simple way to watch Freeview|HD and record the occasional programme.

On the other hand it just doesn't make economic sense for someone who wants a Freeview|HD PVR but doesn't own a PS3 to take this approach. The cost of a PS3 and the inevitable disk upgrade plus PlayTV plus BluRay remote buys a PVR that has a very limited EPG (limited to Now / Next, so only a few hours into the future) and (I inderstand from comments here) only the ability to record one channel at a time, though you can watch but not record a second channel simultaneously.

Of course the PS3 does give you a BluRay player, which is nice but not that helpful if you really wanted a PVR.

FYI: Screen with black outline
After much playing around I have found that on my Bravia tv I can display the input at 'Full Pixel', or normal. With Full pixel selected I receive the black outline. In normal mode it displays fine.
Hope this helps others with the same issue.

On a side note I thought I would record the Football (soccer), TV1 @ 10:45. I have noticed a lot of pixelation and stutering. I did nothing else but watch it as well. Though having watched it at a mates house on MySky HDi before coming home and watching again, I noticed that Sky had Major sound issues with their broadcast tonight. They did state that due to weather conditions the broadcast was not purfect.
I can only asume the recording that TV1 showed may have been a suspect copy from Sky.

Still very impressed though and am glad I got this game on file forever......

Go the All Whites......

You suspect correctly. I watched most of the second half last nite on Sky SD feed and it was terrible. Looked like they had screwed the bit-rate rite down..

I recorded the soccer replay on 1, but it had no sound. Played around and all my other stuff had sound.

I also have a Sony Bravia, and this did fix the problem. Thanks for the info. :-)
However I still think it is an inherent issue with the PlayTV scaling itself though.
The reason I say this is because even though this fixed the problem for PlayTV, if I were to watch a BluRay/DVD from any source it would be shown with some pixels cut off because of the Normal setting. I don't know that I could live with knowing that I am not seeing the "Full Pixel - Picture".

@The people that are not experiencing the "black outline" issue.
Is there a setting on your TV that will change the pixel scaling to see if you can replicate this "black outline" problem. I am curious to know whether you can replicate this problem, and what settings you need to replicate it.

Snicolle: did you play the video within playtv or did you move it to the main interface to play it? not playing the LATM Audio within the normal interface is a known issue
