JefWright: Running 3.21 here and after it auto-stands-by it is silent (no HDD running at all). When I press start and it comes to life quite quickly (depending on how long since its last reboot) and you can here the HDD spin up a second or two after it powers up.

Same with me. I have never noticed the HDD running when it is in standby.

3.21 is pretty stable aside from it getting a bit slow after a week and a reboot once a week fixes that. I'd much rather have to reboot once a week than have it restart every time I turn it on. 3.21 is a step in the right direction.

Using v3.21, do you have any instances where the HDD is still spinning even though the unit appears to be off on the front panel? You need to put your ear to the unit to know if that is happening. The unit would shut down & the HDD spun down but then spun up again & stayed spinning. Other times, after turning off after a scheduled recording, I would notice the HDD spinning hours later, even with the display showing the unit off.

Yip. I read somewhere on here that the hdd remaining spinning is a side effect of the fix for the restart from standby problem.

Yes - I definitely get this happening with v3.21. I did a full power switch off/on (at the back) within the last couple of days to fix this, and so far it's been all quiet when in standby. Give it a few more days though, and when doing a regular remote power off at some point I'll see the display go into standby and the hard disk spins down, and then a couple of seconds later it spins back up again and doesn't stop. I can even tell when it's happening while sitting on the couch, as the disk spinning causes a very low-level vibration hum in the cabinet it's in! Not loud enough to really notice when watching TV, but if the room's quiet at the end of the night, I can spot it. When the disk stops properly the humming stops too.

I'm pretty sure my original disk was running continuously (probably part of the reason for it's over-heat and demise). I can't remember what my temporary 500GB Seagate did but my new 2TB WD red definitely stops and stays stopped. If it's hardware configuration dependant we can see how that might slip by.

Maybe that is the reason I do not get my HDD spinning up. I have a mains power timer set to switch off the mains once every day. If you say it takes a couple of days to occur after a full power off, then my unit never goes more than 24 Hrs before being hard powered off and back on. I will disable the power timer this weekend for a few days and see what happens.

My understanding of the problem is there is a memory leak in the firmware. On v3.20 the machine randomly/eventually runs out of memory causing the spontaneous reboots. On v3.21 the change was to enable virtual memory using a swap file on the hard drive - so no more memory problems but the device gets slower and slower as more swap file is used - hence the need to reboot it. It's also the reason the hard drive spins up sometimes when in standby - the firmware is still running and monitoring the guide information so if it needs to swap then it will spin up. This is more likely as time goes on since the last power cycle as the memory leak uses more memory.

I don't really consider either scenario to be a fix. But with the age of the device I cannot see the manufacturer offering a complete fix either. I think it would be possible to modify the firmware and add a cron job that would reboot the firmware at say 3:00am every morning. That way it would solve the random rebooting, and if done once a day it has the best chance of having the unit not spin up the hard drive in standby. It would be a nice way of not having to use an external time switch I guess.

Only downside is a timer standby would still have to be set up for 3:10am.

I reported an auto reboot problem on 3.13 here to wklie 2.5 years ago, I would argue that something we've had to wait so long for should be fixed other wise Magic have ripped me off. Already had to replace the remote which I have never done on any electronics I have ever owned!

Can you confirm that this is the actual case? If so, can you also confirm you have been testing using simulated 'real world' situations - e.g. scheduling recording multiple channels at one time, multiple recordings per day and not just 1 recoding at time. I have 15 recordings scheduled for a week, some at the same time on different channels (mix of HD and SD channels). Surely the errors would be be likely to occur in this situation. If you are unable to do this with you test setup, perhaps your colleagues at Dish tv could assist.

Some shows have the synopsis but the majority of the regular programmes do not. Freeview has been notified to investigate with Mediaworks

Do you know if they have decided against fixing this?

Maybe that is the reason I do not get my HDD spinning up. I have a mains power timer set to switch off the mains once every day. If you say it takes a couple of days to occur after a full power off, then my unit never goes more than 24 Hrs before being hard powered off and back on. I will disable the power timer this weekend for a few days and see what happens.

I again upgraded to v3.21 (2lostkiwis) and use a mains timer switch, like RingoTB. Set the Auto Standby to activate 10 minutes after the timer reboots the 3600 and have not had any problems with spontaneous rebooting or HDD spin up and it has been a couple of weeks.

Managed to get the new firmware loaded last night. So far it seems to be an improvement over 3.21. The hdd now stops spinning when in standby and no reboots when turning on thus far. The fast forward also seems to be a bit smoother which is very welcome. Hopefully it doesn't slow down anymore over the coming week.
