I fail to understand why in the previous (beta release) i could get dvb-t (and watched soccer match on freeview tvnz sport channel just this morning) but with this current OEM release there is no h.264 support and VMC don't even recognize tv channels... only 2 radio

Reading between the lines h.264 wasn't HDCP enough for the content providers so it got pulled.

Expect it to make a strong come back complete with DRM nightmare attached.

This has been discussed in detail before but in short MS had a deadline to get this package out to OEM's they were still having issues with h.264 and I think one or two other things so it was dropped for now. We will find out in September but the expectation/hope is that they will still release that support but a bit later how much later remains to be seen.

I'll now run dual tuner DVB-S (2 x HVR-3000's) in MCE, 1 for Freeview, 1 for Sky.

The DVB-T tuners are still available for DVBViewer to use in the background for hidef.

Working like a dream - I'm in low def heaven...

What res screen are you watching it on? Is the upscaling quality any good?

Thanks for the clarifiction.. Look forward to having a play.. might finally be able to get Freeview and Telstra working together... then I would be in SD heaven

What res screen are you watching it on? Is the upscaling quality any good?

I run 1920 x 1080p full time - so yes it upscales, Sky can even look good at times...

Quality is as good as you'll ever get standard def. Yes there is a difference between HD and SD, but its not great enough to make me want to use Media Portal or GBPVR just to tick the HD box. I use DVBViewer for "event" based viewing when i feel like it.

Just wondering if it would do a better job than the upscalers in some of the HDD recorders.

Sounds very impressive though! I am jealous and want the same setup!

I doubt you find any upscalers for $100 (the cost of an NVidia 8500 GT) that would get anywhere near the quality. That includes any HDD recorder on the market today. That not to say you couldn't find a better one - but youd need to spend alot more than $100.

w00t! MCE is now ready for digital television in the 1995 era! (dvb-s support i mean)

sarcasm aside.... this is more than enough to satisfy me in the short term, yay for this much making it into the release at least.
