I have clung on to the MTV3600 because I love the features added by 2lostkiwis. I installed 3.23 beta yesterday and so far it is looking promising, though I do sorely miss the skip function.
It seems that it does at least some sort of partial reboot though if standby is used, as I notice that the "mute" state that a leave it in while not replaying is reset after return from standby and also I lose my HDMI connection. I have to reinstate this by crawling behind my installation and unplugging and re-plugging the HDMI cable. This is caused by a HDMI switching box I have to use on the single input to my TV. It has always done this after a reboot which is what made the previous fault condition so inconvenient for me to work around.
Still I can perhaps avoid the issue if I just avoid standby. I shall see how this works out.
Once this new f/w proves stable, here's hoping we can convince 2lostkiwis to pay another visit.
I had almost given up hope of any further action and bought a Panasonic as a replacement, though, until now it remains in its box.

I have only tested 3.22b and I still am having reboots. Mostly I have noticed it when watching TV live with no recording. My MagicTV is plugged directly into the TV and I notice that it looses the HDMI when crashing - so I too have to unplug and plug back in the HDMI cable. The crash/recovery process is much faster now - it doesn't totally reboot the box, more just quits and restarts the application. Granted even though it's faster it's still immensely annoying because it splits recordings and also makes you have to unplug/plug the HDMI connection so not really much better in my books. Still I had almost given up, and was surprised to see this released.

I had patched 3.22b but not much point in releasing it now. I will upgrade to 3.23b and see how that goes.

I had a look at the UI on a friends Panasonic DMR XW390 and to say it was a train wreck was an understatement. It was so slow, and inconsistent - I could not get used to it. A more modern Panasonic might be better, but I have not found a single shop that has a unit on demo that can be played with. I don't see the point of that, they're all just boring black boxes - it's the UI that matters. Why would you buy a box without seeing it?

Was going to buy another 3700 and patch that - but now I am not sure if Freeview+ is something worth having. It's so frustrating because I have the money to spend, I just don't want something that sucks... and I haven't found that yet.

Interesting thoughts.
I haven't had a lot to do with Dish TV stuff, but wonder if it's come of age now and is worth looking at - especially over Freeview+.
At least it's development is local which means faster service response times I imagine plus better familiarity with NZ situations.

Ian, you're a legend. On a side note, does your patch allow any form of access to a terminal session so I can create a cron job to reset the unit? I saw somewhere that you enabled telnet, but I can't seem to connect.

This whole situation is a real shame. I really like my MagicTV 3600, but I genuinely can't believe how difficult it is to get a unit to simply record and playback television...

With v3.23 beta I had a freeze when powering it on from standby so needed to power off/on to fix it. As others have mentioned, it appears to do mini-reboots (usually when powering on from standby) - much faster than a full reboot, but almost as annoying. My picture on HDMI was usually returned after changing input selection and then back to HDMI. As I'm away for a couple of weeks, I've gone back to v3.21 and intend using a timer for that period. Won't be able to test for a wee while.

I have replaced my HDMI switcher with a newer 4-port Aten model. This also had the advantage of the 4th HDMI input is on the front panel, making the forced re-negotiate much easier. However this proved irrelevant as it fixed the negotiation on reboot problem so I've moved my MTV 3600 to a lower port# where I prefer it to be. However, I may still move to the new 4.23 beta2 out of curiosity to see how it goes.
I too had the reboot freeze on a return from standby as reported by cb1. I had to apply CPR via the on/off switch to recover. (I operate in Auto standby). It's only happened the once though and I put it down to a random event. I am happy otherwise with the 3.23 beta fix except for the minor return to default parameters on these reboots. Specifically for me the change of mute status and sort order in the Recordings list.

Yes, it made a difference for me.
I installed this new beta version and it failed to negotiate when it restarted. I had to switch back and forth on ports to get it to work. Negotiation seemed a bit slower than normal.
I switched MTV to standby and waited a few minutes.
On switching on it did the usual short reboot but again failed to negotiate. I had to do the port switching number again to get a connection.
I think I'll be switching back to the previous beta very soon.

This is really a band aid, to help mitigate the effect of the software crashing and not renegotiating HDMI on reloading. It would be preferable to fix the crash issue rather than to mitigate the effect. Remember the crash will split recordings which is another problem - and this patch will not help with this issue. But maybe we're past the point of being able to fix the crashing, and just trying to make the best of a bad situation?

While I certainly agree with that preference, given the age of the 3600, I wasn't too optimistic for seeing a full fix for the slowdown and ultimate crashing caused by this fault. At least we got a work-around band aid. Given my usage rate and running auto standby option, it seems I get sufficiently regular reboots to avoid getting to the crashing stage induced by this fault.

I was surprised to find the beta 2 variant actually providing a retrograde step to my HDMI switch's operation though, so I'm back on 3.23 beta.

Have been trying this firmware since returning from hols. About 80% of the time when I turn it on, there is a delay while it does a mini reboot and hence resets my program list sort order. I have had the unit freeze on power up 2 or 3 times - Just displays 'MAGIC TV' and have had to turn it off with the switch on the back to use it. One of the times was only after ~14 hours of being powered on and very little usage. The day before the latest freeze it had been on for over a week. I was recording 2 shows will watching a third and it was very slow to respond to remote commands - got pixelation on 1 of the recordings being made so there is still a memory issue.

Anybody else have comments?
