wilt64:? would be worth while putting the same request on the PlayTV Freeview forums as well

Where can I find this Wilt?? (do you mean the freeviewshop forum?). Is there another official Sony forum or anything where NZ'rs contribute?

I've just put it on the freeviewshop forum as well.

Hi, well I've just done this and here are my results:

Signal strength:84-89%
Location: Wellington city off Mt Kaukau, dedicated DIY UHF aerial feeding PlayTV direct
HDD: 500Gb Western Digital Scorpio Blue

What happened:
Step 1. ie. Start recording something on TV3 Wait 5 minutes

result: maybe 2 stutters of 1/2 sec. every minute - nothing out of the ordinary

Step 2. ie. Change channel to TV1, Press Pause (live pause), Wait 3 minutes or so

result: it's paused so obviously nothing happening here ;)

Step 3. ie. Press Play and start watching back TV1, See how this looks after another 5 minutes

result: again maybe 2-3 stutters of 1/2 sec. every minute - nothing out of the ordinary

Step 4. I added this step in - watch the recorded TV3

result: maybe 5-6 stutters of 1/2 sec. every minute - and one or 2 of the stutters were quite pixelated ie. distorted over 1/2 of the screen but again, nothing I haven't seen before

Experiment over...

Ok here is my findings.

- PS3 original 60gb now with 320gb WD
- Location Christchurch City Sugarloaf
- Antenna Lincrad "Gizmo with added UHF directors and distributation amplifier with 16db gain
- Signal strength 97-100%

1) Record TV3 wait 5min switched to TV1 started watching...all fine, pause TV1 wait 3min or so and un-pause 1/2 sec jitter then 100%, watched delayed for 5min and during that time had 1 split second shudder,

2) Now went back to the TV3 recording and checked that (has now been running for 15min or so) played it back, during the whole 15min would have had a couple of VERY brief shudders nothing major at all, one I would suggest when I put TV1 on pause???

Over all worked fine for me.

Tonight I will try the other PS3 (also original 60gb still with the original 60gb HDD in it)

I have a 500GB drive, and my signal strength is well below what you guys are reporting, and I very rarely experience skips/stutters/pixelation.

What kind of drive? I'm reasonably happy with mine but I do tend to get a bit of stuttering, it's not too bad (I'm sorry I haven't had a chance to run any tests). I may try putting the 60GB back in and see how that goes...

Ok last night I spent some time doing many tests on both PS3's with very good results, here are my findings

320gb PS3
- Set up TV3 to record, left for 15min (timed it with timer)
- Changed channel to TV1 ran live for 5min then paused left on pause for a further 5min
- Un-paused TV1 watched for a further 5min pausing a further 3 times during that time with no problems at all (no shudder on TV1)
- Changed to TV2 carried out the same as above.
- Changed to the Freeview HD test channel also carried out the same as above (TV3 still recording) all working fine.
- Went back to TV3 watched that for a while then stopped the recording (by this time TV3 had been recording for a good 45min)
- Played back TV3 was a very brief shudder right at the start but surprisingly for the rest of the recording it was perfect not one pixilation or shudder!! very happy with the results.
- Put TV3 back on record, inserted a game into the blu-ray DVD drive (Little Big Planet) started to play game (taking note of time I loaded in to game etc, played for about 15min, exit out of game and back into PlayTV stopped TV3 recording and played back, here are the results
1) Brief shudder right at start
2) Another brief shudder (would have been during the time I was exiting out of PlayTV)
3) Another longer shudder with some pixilation (about 3 sec worth) as I was loading the game.
4) All working fine until I escape out of the game and back into PlayTV I had 2 brief shudders during that time.
- TV3 back on record and went back to the XMB and played a game from my HDD which I had downloaded from the PS store played for 5min and went back into PlayTV and played back recording.
1) Brief shudder when escaping out of PlayTV another brief shudder when loading game off the HDD. During the time I was playing the game I had 3 shudders and one slightly worse shudder/pixilation ((when I was shutting game down))
Then went into "Home" for 5min, interesting to note during the time I was in home the recording was perfect which I was surprised about as Home is quiet hard on the HDD???

Carried out the same test on the 60gb PS3 with very simular results.

It's not much of a test though, because it sounds like you've never had a problem. It'll be interesting to see what (if any) difference it makes if I put my 60GB back in. If that goes OK, I may look at getting a smaller drive (320GB like yours). Perhaps that will work better? Otherwise, if the 60GB is no better I'll just stick with the 500GB and hope some problems can be fixed later. It works "OK" at the moment, but not nearly as good when I'm watching a recording at the same time...

Thanks Bazzer, and all others that contributed.

Sounds like you and I are in the same boat. Under normal viewing, or watching back of recordings mine works pretty well, odd pixelation/full stutter but recovers well. It's only under the use of two things at once that I experience problems.

Could be signal quality, even though I get full strength, but I really would expect this to create problems during playback as well. It's a twin tuner box, is there a fault with one of them?!
Really wish Sony would add some of the diagnostic smarts from their TV's and the DVD player part of the PS3 into the PlayTV software to display bit rates/and bit error rates as well. Would really be helpful in sorting this out. Really tempted to bung in a 7200,16mb cache WD black drive and see how that affects things.

Mine is a Fat 40Gb version, upgraded to 500Gb hard drive and I experience picture breakup essentially when the hard drive is engaged.
Wilt64's is a Fat 60GB version, upgraded to 320Gb hard drive and plays fine.

We'd like to check from you all, what version hardware do you have?
I'd like to test a possible link:

If you have PlayTV working fine, Is you base PS3 an original Fat 60gb or new slim version?

And those experiencing any pixelation/stuttering, do you have a Fat 40 or 80Gb unit?

60GB Fat (US version). No problem with simulatneous PlayTV watching and recording. Occasional pixellation on the picture but since that also occurs on GBPVR using the Hauppauge NOVA-T 500 card I attribute that to my signal which is split from the UHF antenna

I see that the PlayTV hardware is available new in NZ (http://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/PS3/Play-TV/3668744/ for example). I didn't think we'd had an NZ release yet though...
Other than being more expensive than importing from UK, is there any reason not to go for (what looks to be) local??
