Very janky, an outside contributor can essentially pull the plug or redirect some of the streams and cripple parts of the device. They're lucky that they didn't choose a dodgier stream source...

One would assume that DishTV would be liable under the CGA to maintain the stream sources.

All it takes is an app update to fix, but people could be left for days perhaps without a channel, or worse with something questionable in nature.

Yup, hopefully this is a first run at testing the waters. Then if it proves popular (sounds like Noels wellington sold out pretty quick) then they start putting some better stuff in place.

I setup one last night, it is better than DVB-S - was very easy to setup, and runs netflix nicely. The freeview channels were noticeable 720 (ie not 1080) the +1 and Prime channels would be nice to haves.

From Freeview, when I pointed this out: "We do have a solution underway which will allow URLs to be dynamically updated, it’s currently being tested before deployment in 2k19.  The solution at launch is a temporary one.  The Huisman URL will be updated shortly as well, and so long as the user has signed in to their Google account and has not disabled automatic updates in Settings (enabled by default), the updates will be automatically downloaded & installed to keep it up-to-date."

It needs a Google account as well?

No thanks.

It's an Android TV device.

You say that like it's obvious. I only own one Android device, which happens to be an Android-based TV. It manages to update the firmware without a Google account.

So does that mean Freeview is just an app (based on people extracting strings I believe that is the case), apps depends on the App Store to upgrade, and the App Store requires a Google account?

From what I've seen of the app - running on both their device, and unsupported on my Sony Bravia - They would have been better off selling the same device, with an NZ-Preconfigured 'Live Channels' app.

- Though I suppose that would be hard for them to maintain?

Maybe just keeping a playlist and EPG URL up-to-date though... So maybe even easier to maintain?

It certainly gave a better experience than their Freeview Live TV app.

@freitasm Does this mean Freeview might have plans to release it as an official Freeview App in the Google store in 2019.
Or is this a Dish App and as such the official way to obtain it will be by purchasing a Dish product?

Did Freeview give any indication about the above when you contacted them?

No info on either way. I guess they release to approved devices only so they can limit exposure to problems on different configurations.

Update, I just received mine via courier from Dish. Easy as to set up. Only negative is no batteries for remote.

Quite impressed so far. Pic quality is fine. Size is amazing. Just don't expect an Nvidia shield experience.

Just to be clear: are all FTA channels in 720?

If that’s the case, it’s a bit off-putting for me.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.
