I know the movies start and finish in the full wide screen to show the credits but why don't they show the whole movie in its full widescreen format and leave it to the viewers if they want to adjust it to fit the screen themselves?

Cheers

It is broadcast in 16:9 widescreen (1.78:1)

The movie was shot in 2.39:1 but like all pretty much all DVD's that are then reformatted in 1.78:1 all material for broadcast TV is also formatted in this by the studio. If it wasn't TV networks would be inundated with complaints by people complaining about black borders at the top and bottom of the screen.
