Hi everyone, Im a bit of a noob when it comes to CSS menus, but I've got something that looks nice with some background images and dropdown items. Check it out at www.lens.co.nz

Im having a problem though, I have a big dirty iFrame under my CSS menu, which displays the main content of the webpage, and sometimes it needs to display pdf files, when it displays these pdfs my CSS menu seems to get 'stuck' behind it (very obvious if your using opera). I've had a good play with z-index's but cant seem to sort it out.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, plugins usually behave this way in many circumstances, and I don't think this can be solved in any way.

Maybe reposition your iframe lower, and then make a horizontal menu (or try any other way to workaround this)

I (and many people) strongly discourage the use of iframes. They're old. But sometimes they're still useful. So I usually make up workarounds wherever possible - just use your head!

itxtme, that's an awesome reply.

I don't think there is a way to do this. Back in the days of using frames, to accomplish slide out menus over another frame, I had a Javascript hack that would display the menu inside the content frame, while being triggered from the menu frame.

If the iFrame is loading a PDF document, there would be no way for HTML to displayed within - I think you'd be best to rethink your implementation.

whats the alternative to an iframe? and would using such alternative help with my issue?

The alternative to Iframes is to have the website design based on a structure that changes every time the link is pressed. So instead of having the iframe load the alternative page the whole page reloads content and all.

How you would do this with PDF's is by embeding them (use specific HTML code) http://www.planetpdf.com/mainpage.asp?webpageid=1682

Iframes are difficult to handle and should only be used in exceptional cirumstances!

Hi pwaddles, I can't say I've ever attempted this personally - but as others have said I very much doubt you'll find any way to overlay html elements overtop the acrobat plugin. This is not really a CSS issue as much a quirk of using a plugin to display content.

With that said - Is it really necissary to embed PDF's inside the iFrame container? that strikes me as a horrible thing to do to your visitors.

Could those links not open the PDF in a new browser window? that would be a much more friendly approach - even more so if the links can be clearly marked as PDF. There's nothing worse than clicking on a link only to find yourself downloading a 12MB PDF document and waiting while Acrobat makes a cup of coffee or whatever the hell it does that takes forever and eats up most of your memory.

Have you thought about using a pdf include statement to include the pdfs instead of an iframe? Not sure how well this would work without going right into it and investigating all possibilities but it's an idea of the top of my head.
