I am really not sure where to post this, Geekzone really needs a how to section or something.

Recently I had the task of moving a client's two Windows VM's onto a brand new host.

Now in the previous versions of VMware's ESX you are able to use a free product called Veeam Fast SCP which is a brilliant bit of software that allows you to copy file between hosts via a nice GUI (http://www.veeam.com/vmware-esxi-fastscp.html)

Now the problem I had was the client was moving to vSphere 5.0 and currently Fast SCP does not support vSphere 5.
Bugger!

Looking futher around on their site lead me to another product Veeam provide.  Veeam Backup and Replication v6. (http://www.veeam.com/vmware-esx-backup.html?ad=menu)

The free trial period of the software allows you to perform the same tasks as Fast SCP and it fully supports vSphere 5.0

The software also has other great looking features, once i get started on my next project which will involve it i will be able to tell you more.

So, if you are wanting to move your VM's to a new host without shared storage, try Veeam Backup and Replication.

P.S. it appears to support Hyper-V but i have not had the chance to try it out.

Nice tip! Interesting to know Fast SCP has this limitation at the moment.
