ZFS will allow you to do this so I would expect that you can on a FreeNAS box even if you need to do some of the setup outside of the friendly gui.

You would create two ZFS pools, one raided and another not and then put a file system on each pool.

RAM errors are quite common, I've an array at work with a bad DIMM waiting on replacement, and had a few other arrays over the years complain as well.

I think I read a report from Google a few years back on the subject, will see if I can dig it up.

Amount of 3.5" disk you can fit inside it = 0, so no it would not make a good nas.

I've gone away from FreeNAS just because of the hardware requirements - you basically have to build a medium spec'd server, $700 minimum not including disks and probably quite a bit more. You can do it on the cheap but it's said over and over that ECC RAM is *essential* otherwise you'll likely lose data.

I'm thinking ReFS and Storage Spaces will be good enough for me. I don't need a NAS, just protected storage.

Ideally you'd want 6 SATA ports and ECC RAM, so I don't think it'd be up to it.
