Hmmm it should be in a conflicted state I thought so I am surprised that it could be registered, but I don't think it was up to anyone to contact you I think you need to go through the process; http://anyname.nz/pdfs/conflict-how-to-guide.pdf
Have just found out that if, like me, you include your website domain in your email addresses, if you include the new domain in the .nz format, and are emailing from your ISP to someone who uses gmail, your email will go into their spam folder. But if you leave your signature as .co.nz then it arrives in their inbox as before.
I have logged this with the gmail admin blog, but don't know how much they take notice of that. Also, don't know what other companies valid domain url's in emails to decide on anti-spam rules.
Expect it will be sorted one day, but is a lesson to not jump the gun too soon.

Only if you registered it during 2012 or before. Can't recall the exact cut off date in 2012, but it sounds like you registered it after that date.
