sifly: And sorry - but I totally disagree with "charitable" hosting.

If a charity can't afford the minimal amount that some sites offer they shouldn't be doing it.

The reason that people offer things for free is to free up the money that would otherwise be used for that thing to be used for the charitable organisation's purpose.

That doesn't really make sense.

Regardless, if you cant afford 6 or 7 dollars a month your charity is useless..

People need to do their research when looking for web hosting. Some of the low cost ones seem to have a very short life. Some of the best ones have been around for 10 plus year so I suggest people looking for a new one look for one that has a proven long term business.

Also as someone mentioned above , you get what you pay for , and not all hosting is the same quality.

And as I've said previously, I did my research by coming here to find plenty of recommendations for 247hosting but that was two years ago now.

A lot has changed since then and I've now moved to 1stdomains. Again using recommendations from here and so I hope the same doesn't happen again :)

I only used them for the domain names so at least I haven't had any troubles with the sites themselves.

Did you read freitasm post on the previous page, as that was 2011. Perhaps do your own research rather than only relying on 'recommendations'

freitasm: These guys were trouble back in 2011 according to FairGo, so I am surprised people still used them after that. Where there's smoke there is fire...

I seem to remember reading somewhere after this that 24/7 Hosting had changed hands and had greatly improved. I guess that's the problem with the Internet - without trawling through company records etc. for every company you deal with its hard to know whether what you are reading is fact or fiction...

24/7 appears to have gone AWOL. 24/7 was a Domain Name Reseller of Voyager Internet / 1stDomains. Voyager can help 24/7 customers to recover their UDAI, and can also provide Domain Name Registration services directly to 24/7 Hosting customers. For assistance, please contact service@1stdomains.co.nz or 0800 200024. Please note that Voyager did not host Email or Web-Sites for 24/7, but if you contact Voyager with your username / password fro the 24/7 Cpanel or FTP site, Voyager will migrate your web-sites, email and domains to your own account and give you three months free as well.

Would suggest people backup anything they have hosted in 24/7 ASAP as who knows how long it'll be until the plug is pulled completely.

I've got a client who got your email yesterday, and apparently has tried to get their UDAI by emailing yesterday, but hasn't heard anything back. What is the process?

Even if a provider does offer something free, someone is paying for it. Someone has to pay the wages of people providing support. Also will it stay free forever, or is it just a hook to initially get a customer, and then a year down the track will they then need to charge. Due to the low cost of hosting,  I can't see how any charity couldn't really afford it.

I apologise if Tickets at 1stDomains haven't been answered - we're working our way through 6,000 24/7 Hosting customer's requests for UDAIs / Assistance etc - doing the best we can!

onebytemike: I had to laugh at this: https://twitter.com/HooplaHosting/status/467910542590357504/photo/1

I've been following the calamity caused by 247hosting, and the appearance of HostBee.

After following the conversations from that Twitter link, I was wondering about the accusation of fake reviews. I guess I found them.

If I was a disgruntled 24hosting customer, I would be cautious of HostBee and their 5/5 TrustedCompany.com reviews as well. I would rather recommend Hoopla and 1stDomains from experiences with them.

I got a copy of the UDAI, but when transferring away it displays an error to say the UDAI is invalid...
