Someone suggested I play this. I hate them. I normally have such good self control, but I am lost to this game. :)

Frustratingly I have reached level 50, and now it won't let me proceed unless I "ask more friends" whatever that means. I am not on facebook (officially). Other than paying is there another way?

Secondly, how do I backup my progress if I want to wipe my phone?

Haha, it is addictive (stuck on 245 at the moment).

If it isn't signed in to your Facebook account it should ask if you want to do quests - 1 level a day for 3 days then it lets you through.

There's an incredible amount of psychology that goes into games like Candy Crush. You can play for free, but there are roadblocks that slow your progress unless you do something that benefits the game maker. Linking to Facebook and getting your friends involved is easy advertising, and there are always people willing to pay real money for virtual rewards.

I'm currently hooked on a game called Dragon Story. The idea is simple: breed dragons. There are 3 main resources in the game: food, silver coins and gold bars. You can grow food, and you earn coins by owning dragons. Gold bars must either be given to you by friends (with limitations on giving), or bought with real money. Short on food or coins? Buy some with gold bars. Want to speed up one of the many things that take hours/days to do? Pay gold. Want a rare item? Pay gold. By the way, did you know there's a sale on gold right now? ...

You get the picture. They give you as many incentives as possible to pay real money. If you're patient and know their tricks, you can play for free indefinitely. If you're impatient and/or don't realize you're being fooled, you may well become a source of easy income. Thankfully I'm neither :-)
