NikT: I'd normally suggest ADB reboot recovery, but since she can't get into settings to turn on USB debugging, that's a problem.
I would imagine the button combo for recovery mode just hasn't been executed correctly, as it can be a bit finicky on older devices (There's a nice blue Recovery Booting line on my Note 3 that makes things much easier).
Pull battery, resert. Hold both power & the applicable volume key (Usually the home key is required as well) until boot screen displays. Release power, continue holding volume key until the device boots into recovery mode. Failing that, try the other volume key for download mode & reflash device with Odin, ticking the erase data box in the process. This is assuming she's out of warranty, as a warranty repair would be preferable.

old3eyes: I reset my Mother-in-laws one several time before I finally found someone to permanently take it off my hands. From memory it was in the settings maybe Backup and Reset area. It wasn't too hard to find..

Oh right, I was thinking Galaxy Y for some reason.
In that case bin it, be a good mate and hook her up with something decent like a Moto G. :)

NikT: It likely has a fastboot mode in lieu of Samsung's proprietary download mode. This can be used for command line software flashing, and will require a crash course in fastboot commands (fastboot flash [x], nice & straightforward really). Fastboot is pretty sweet.
