I have a very powerful computer. The Android Emulator, when testing "Hello, Android" sample app, takes soo long to load. About 2 minutes! It says "ANDROID" with basic text for about 1 minute, then goes to a fancy Android screen, then finally loads the home page, then app.

Any ideas if something is causing a hang?

Thats about the same as my computer.

The idea is to boot it once (at the start of your coding session) and leave it running until you next need it. You don't need to boot it each time you want to test or debug an app.

Works fine on my PC's - Windows and Linux. The Linux version tends to be faster even on a much older and slower PC.

Have you got any AV or other stuff in the background that would slow it down? BOINC/SETI?

Have you tried shutting down all you can (Probably, but worth asking).

I run it on Vista Home Premium.

BTW...Last I checked, Win7 wasn't a supported platform. If it is now, it was very recent.

Thinking about this a bit more. The emulator takes slightly longer to boot than my old HTC Magic with the stock Android v1.5 load it originally came with. That could be the better part of two minutes. The upgrade to v1.6 made things go a bit faster...and some of the modded ROMs Iplayed with were very fast - mainly because they cut stuff out of the boot process....and did them later. (Sort of the Windows approach - give you the desktop, but you can't really use it for another minute anyway).

But 2 minutes isn't bad for the emulator starting from scratch...and it runs fine once open.

My PCs have 4GB of RAM. How much have you got? More is better.

4gb ram -- suggesting that I should just keep it minimized instead of closing out when I'm done testing saves countless time! Thanks!

If you have a phone connected, you can also treat it like an emulator through ddms.

Agreed, the emulator is slow to start up on all our machines. 2 minutes isn't out of the ordinary. Keeping it open as has been suggested is the most practical solution.

It takes about 45 seconds on my laptop; 2.33 GHz/3 GB/OS X 10.6.3. Two minutes does sound a bit excessive for a faster machine!

I should have mentioned that all our machines are Win XP so perhaps its a bit snappier on OS X.
