If you root your phone, a lot of applications like banking ones will detect it and not work is my understanding.

So even if know how to do it, seems like will still limit what can be used for.

Plus I like stuff to almost work out of the box and not have to risk the warranty if something goes wrong.

zyo: Every Android user should know the following:

  • Install Root
  • Install twrp
  • Obtain and flash a 3rd party rom without bricking the damn thing.
  • Obtain and flash GApps
  • Obtain and flash Magisk

Failing any one of the above and you are a disgrace to the Android community.

/s

I presume you're joking, Right? I'd suggest less than 5% of Android owners know anything about gaining root access etc.

jjnz1: Na that's general knowledge. 3G and 4G core networking components are not as big a risk apparently. So our major telcos are fine.

Actually, it is not just wireless ;-)

The playstore. You can easily install it by yourself. There are several alternatives as well.

Pretty much what you wrote is true except that if a company wants to sells millions of devices (and Huawei is the #2 smartphone maker, behind Samsung and ahead of Apple), then you can't rely on "people can install the Play Store themselves".

This is not how it works. A small percentage is capable of installing third party software. You are not representative of the majority of users.

Thats ok.  People don't have to.  The secret Chinese government departments monitoring Huawei phones can install everything for them.

I do quite like the malaysian governments approach.... they already gave up on national defense and don't care if china spies ...

https://www.todayonline.com/world/malaysia-will-use-huawei-much-possible-says-mahathir

Dr Mahathir reasoned that Huawei's research is "far bigger than the whole of Malaysia's research capabilities”, reported Malaysian news agency Bernama.

"So we try to make use of their technology as much as possible," he explained.

Speaking at the Future of Asia forum in Tokyo on Thursday (May 30), Dr Mahathir added that Malaysia would not be deterred by the security concerns around Huawei.

Dr Mahathir said: "Yes, there may be some spying. But what is there to spy (on) exactly in Malaysia? We are an open book."

"Everybody knows, if any country wants to invade Malaysia, they can walk through, and we will not resist because it's a waste of time."

New Zealand is in the boat. Anything anyone wants to know about us they can get from Google. If anyone wanted to invade us there is nothing we can do. We have two Frigates, 4 Patrol boats, no Fighter or strike aircraft, no attack helicopters, no tanks, and handful of artillery pieces, and tiny number of ground to air hand controlled anti aircraft  missiles. Our Army is so under funded and manned it can barely raise a Battalion of combat trained soldiers. We do however have a very good SAS unit.

Yeah, I'm with you @surfisup1000, I don't care if China invades New Zealand either, I think human rights and racial equality, freedom of movement, the right to protest and freedom of religion are totally over-rated. Next time the students do a protest on Queen street we should run them all over with Army Tanks. Yeah I agree, a Chinese Govt would suit me just fine. Besides it would save having a pesky election every 3 years.

Dr Mahathir doesn't show gratitude very well. Next time Malaysia gets invaded we won't repeat the mistake of helping free his country, like we did twice in the last 80 years.

On a serious note, I don't think Malaysia is an example relevant to us or to aspire to. A large proportion of the Malaysian population is Chinese, so spying is extremely hard to stop regardless of cellular technology, and Malaysia has a chronic problem with government corruption, so the Chinese just use bribes to get their way. The good Dr could already be on the take.

And that there is a perfect example of how information security works. Mike is very confident he knows all there is to know about the nz defence force - so why bother correcting him if there is stuff he doesn't know about?

I can see economic benefits in spying on us - getting the best of trade deals, currency/share speculation etc.
Also maybe niche research info a company had gained.

Also maybe finding out 3rd party info that NZ has shared/acquired.

But yes, if we are invaded we are going to cry for help and that's about it.

Won't be long before China owns enough of the NZ economy to just turn us into a colony anyway.

If you read back on many of my posts over the years you will see that I am from a family with heavy involvement in the NZ Defence Force.

Was I wrong about the size?

Was I wrong about the capabilities?

Was I wrong about the equipment?

It may surprise you to learn that Google doesn't know everything, even if it can find you advanced copies to the Budget. Besides, they don't have Google in China - it is banned remember?

What you have stated are reasons to be even more vigilant, not reasons to be more cavalier.

Yet it takes a few seconds to use Google in China and any other search engine. My comment "Anything anyone wants to know about us they can get from Google" was not meant to be literal, it meant anything about NZ is not hard to find out.

What I am saying is the Malaysian gentleman is aware of their capabilities which are vastly better than ours and knows that an invader could walk through. In NZ an aggressor could fly transport aircraft loaded with troops into Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch Airports and Ohakea Airbase and that would be game over. That is the reality of our capabilities.

However unless an aggressor is desperate for space, sheep, Tui Beer and or milk there is no real incentive to go to the trouble.
