Engadget review out today, rather took me by surprise - said its the best smartphone available today, period. I half expected a 7/10 for no good reason given the source, but they just couldn't find much to criticise (they were the only reviewers not to get flash working though).

That must have hurt them to say that.

Josh Topolsky and Nilay Patel no longer work at Engadget - this explains the about turn.

Yeah a lot of Nilays reviews were questionable, Josh did a lot of good work though:
he gave:
Atrix 9/10
G1 8/10

Unfortunately Richard Lai is still festering round Engadget too.  That guy is making the place just like Gizmodo.
This review in particular, show's how much of a fanboy he is:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/mobee-magic-charger-review-wirelessly-juice-up-your-apple-magic/

9/10 for a Magic Mouse charger

Matches well with the Magic Mouse
No need to take out batteries for charging
Attractive pricing

Took 3 days instead of 6 hours to fully charge
Battery shows 70 percent charge even when full

WTF
Took 3 days to charge and only shows 70% full on the battery charger.  That would be a 2/10 if I reviewed it.

Hi guys,
Just a thought would it be more reasonable to buy it from mobicity rather than importing it from clove if the price difference is only $100-150?(that is my if calculations are correct). Im just worried that if i import it what happens if theres something wrong with the unit and i have to ship it back? JUst really after some enlightenment on the advantages of buying it from clove over mobicity. thanks!

I am gutted I missed the first shipment from Mobicity, are there any other NZ retailers/etailers who will be getting these phones at release time?

If you do buy from a company with a local presence (e.g. Mobicity, and no doubt others in the near future) then you have legal recourse should anything go wrong (Consumer Guarantees Act). You should also get some sort of local warranty, in case any there are faults with your phone.

This was exactly my reason for ordering from Mobicity over Clove. There isn't a lot of difference in cost: $1219 from Mobicity (using a $20 coupon code to cover the shipping cost), or around $1155 from Clove (including shipping and GST). That's only about $64, which isn't that much to pay for peace of mind.

If you're very lucky and don't get stung for GST when the phone comes in, you could save over $250 by ordering from Clove. However, there's a good chance you will get charged, and it's a pain if you have to send the phone back for any reason.

Mobicity getting more for release anyway?

First pre-order allotment is now full however more stock is inbound on 3rd of May and should ship at the same time for all orders placed after 27th April.

Mobicity quote this on their website:

EDIT: Beaten to it - should type faster.
