NZtechfreak: Actually the Desire has been Rooted, only that didn't grant full write access, so more work is being done. It'll happen before too long, apparently the two main Android hackers are both packing the Desire these days, so I'd expect news on this front relatively soon.

Just out of curiosity, where did you get that information from? I check out xda frequently and can't find anything recent on rooting the Desire over there.

IF that is indeed the case I might hang off a while as a rootable Desire would be my first choice without a doubt.

Check Modaco, Paul over there has Rooted the Desire, just some more work to do to circumvent some new protections.

Thanks.

That website is a jumbled mess though, I can't find anything about the Desire.

Anyone know where the Desire will be available from in Oz withOUT any form of Contract and in an unlocked state? (Can always unlock them so not a biggy really)

The Desire apparently has ROM/Radio level write protection to the non-user partitions so they may need to find a way to hack the primary bootloader or find some sort of "Goldcard" solution. Paul @ MoDaCo is likely to be the man to do it but he's on holiday for another week so nothing from him for at least that long, doesn't mean someone on XDA won't beat him to it though.

The fact he's got root access means it's probably just a matter of time for him or someone else to get a custom recovery flashed onto the things for some custom ROM goodness. From what I've seen with the Hero, HTC are not too hot at optimisation as the custom MCR ROMs are significantly quicker, so the Desire holds a lot of promise if this is the case again.

Paul O'Brien is on holiday until the 20th. I'd like to find a database of how they go about rooting the phones. I have a cheap phone in mind I'd like to have a crack at. :-)

I can see why they want to protect the radio. People messing with the radio is one of the main ways to brick their phones....and then they try to claim warranty.

None of the reviews suggest the Desire is a letdown, most are calling it te best smartphone yet made.

It is indeed easy to see why HTC are keen to prevent people Rooting the phone, I agree.

EXCELLENT! If they are up to orders from the 5th they can't be far from my order from the 7th!

It would be nice to have the weekend to play and become acquainted. I'm also away at a conference from Tuesday all next week so it had better arrive before then!!!!!Surprised
