Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody else is interested in this handset? For those who don't know its basically HTC's own brother the Google Nexus One (which HTC manufacture).

Its spec sheet is very similar, but its got a few extra things going for it - better looks, Sense UI, optical trackpad instead of trackball, more buttons, in a soon to be released firmware it gains 720P video capture and DivX playback.

I can get it for around $1000NZ (slightly less if anything), which makes it cheaper than the Nexus One for a slightly better piece of kit. Will arrive in NZ around the 14th of next month. Parallel Importers probably won't start selling it for a few weeks after that, and their price is likely to be in the order of $1100-1300NZ.

Anyone interested? To order I would need to buy them all at once, since that makes shipping much cheaper for each unit, which means payment up front.

I had the same editing problem in my browser on desktop. I think it is bug in Geekzone.

It's a new "feature", Mauricio posted about it in the Geekzone design update thread, there is a time limit after which you can no longer edit existing posts.

Apparently they had some problems with people going back and revising their posts to change what they had said or something like that.

Its a shame you cant rent phones for a month or so to see what they are like in the flesh before buying them. This looks great but its always hard make a choice off a spec sheet.

Quick update to the first post in response to a very reasonable question someone PM'd me:

I'll have to check for sure, but usually these things are covered for replacement for dead-on-arrival, international manufacturers warranty for hardware/software (difficult to access, need to send the device away etc, but still covered nevertheless).

EDIT: Checked, looks like my source will sort issues within the first 28 days, thereater manufacturers warranty applies.

Dang, looks like a nicely specc'd piece of kit. A pity i jumped ship to XT for the cheaper bills, but probably just as well as otherwise i'd be spending way too much money on new phones heh.

I look forward to hearing from you how it stacks up.

have been leaning towards the x10 but am worried how much it'll end up costing..plus i like the build quailty of the n1/desire phones..

whats the diff again between the N1 and the desire? desire has a FM radio ..N1 gets noise cancel..

isn't there also a XT version of the desire due soonish?

Some reviews are starting to come in, Pocket Lint and Tech Radar are the two I've seen. Very positive on both counts. Pocket Lint only major complaints was lack of 720P video capture, and lack of DivX playability, both of which are coming soon in the first FW update.

Here is Tech Radars verdict:
"In short, this is a phenomenal phone - one of the best we've ever had on TechRadar. Usually when we like a phone on the first use, we end up horribly disappointed after a little time with it, but the HTC Desire kept on performing and achieving when we thought it wouldn't.

The screen is lovely, the design is slick and processor makes everything happen in a flash - all you'd want from a smartphone.

Sure, some people will want slightly nicer design (we'd advise you check out the Legend) or a simpler home screen and richer app store at the moment (look at the iPhone 3GS) but as a piece of hardware it's without par in the mobile world.

A stunning phone, and one that will show the world that Android isn't just for the hackers and phone geeks any more."
