July  upgrade came through today for my Nokia 5. Size of 136 mb came through quickly on wifi. Installed with one restart in less than 5 minutes.

Mine is stuck at the "No command" screen after the update.

Buggy recovery. You can fix it yourself if you have SD card.

Great, just what I wanted to be doing this weekend. The one time it gets an update on time and it soft-bricks itself.

How do I do this? (was going to bin the phone but now I want to use it while I get my iPhone's battery replaced). All the info on XDA is overwhelming, I don't know where to start. How do you get the official firmware and how do you know it's for the right phone (1033)?

You can grab direct download links from xda, Nokia 6 OTA Update DDLs. URLs contain model name like nokia_ple_ta102500ww. If you hesitate you can always download zip file, extract it and check metadata file. However updates for unlocked TA-1021/1025/1033/1039 are identical inside and have different metadata only, so you can install any.

You were on June update when July OTA soft-bricked handset? You need to downgrade recovery to Nougat first.

1. Put Dec 2017 and July 2018 OTAs on SD card.
2. Boot into recovery
3. Install Dec 2017 update from SD card. It fails, but overwrites sbl/aboot/recovery partitions.
4. Reboot your phone into recovery again, recovery version should be 7.1.2.
5. Install July 2018 update from SD card.

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately the phone wouldn't apply the July update from the SD card. All appeared to be going well until the third stage of applying that update, then it spat an error and now it's back to No command. I tried to apply the july update second time, but that failed in the first stage. (by stages I mean when the colourful circle animation is happening and and incrementing through those three white dots at the bottom of the screen with a reboot between each)

Hm, that's interesting. Can you try the same procedure, but instead of installing July OTA install Feb 2018 OTA. It carries full firmware image rather than incremental and therefore has no any pre-requisites. It will revert back your phone to Android 8.0.0

You will need to do factory reset after downgrading from 8.1 to 8.0, or at least wipe out cache partition via recovery.

Thanks so much, I tried it with the Feb update and the factory reset and everything went fine this time. Phone is now usable again and immediately allowed me to install all the subsequent updates OTA (was holding my breath for the july one!).

The XDA thread seems to be saying that those DL links are to official servers, so completely safe?

Yeah. Download links were intercepted/extracted while phones were actually checking for updates, so it's safe.

A big update came through a day or two ago for my Nokia 5.  It was 462mb in size and took a few minutes to install but all good.

Anyone know when the 5.1's are going to be released in NZ? I'm pretty keen for one as my next phone.
