Did you download the Samfirmware one or the Doc one?

Samfirmware one from XDA.

Disabled Voodoo lagfix, flashed with Odin, factory reset, flashed Chainfire Root (restores 2e recovery, clockworkmod compatible, and Roots), Titanium Backup to restore apps and then a while getting everything up to speed again.

So far impression are very favourable indeed.

Speed is good, but then it always is post flash, although thats with ~95 apps installed after Titanium was done, so still gives me a good feeling about how this will perform over time. I'm getting ~1100 on Quandrant with this one, for whatever thats worth.

Lots of little bugfixes that I really like in here - default player now reads playlist files, setting custom ringtones to individual contacts from the default player finally works, I read that subtitles now work in the video player, 339MB RAM free at boot on this firmware. TouchWiz seems a lot more decent, although I quickly got LauncherPro Plus running of course, but it now has the Sense-styled leap view (and you can rearrange the preview cards, which is nice and needed in LauncherPro). Press Reader app works.

Sadly still no LastFM scrobbling with the inbuilt player, so I guess its still WinAmp for me at the moment.

They still haven't fixed the camera app so that you can turn off geotagging if you wanted to, its enabled by default.

There is the usual post-flash enthusiasm for the GPS at XDA, will see how it performs tomorrow with Run.GPS now that I'm cycling to work again (on JPK I found it fine for navigation, but it struggled with tracking activities this week - it was either fine or awful, restart would fix it though).

Browser speed is improved, but now get the dreaded checkerboard pattern on scrolling before pages fully load, and they still haven't fixed zoom reflowing properly. Overall I'll take the speed though.

Only app incompatibility casualty so far appears to be BattStatt, which just sits there saying loading the whole time. Will email the dev (brilliant text widget for battery).

Upgraded To froyo today, used the kies registry patcher. Easy to do, just chose Vod UK as option and then immediately switched back to VNZ. Kies then told me an upgrade was available, installed in about 5 to 10 minutes. The phone didn't really lag before but wow it is much quicker now. All I lost was the power widget and task manger type widget. If anyone upgrades though, I recommend turning the phone off after the upgrade and then back on. As it worked much quicker after a reboot.

I think the really interesting point underlying this is that Samsung are still working on new firmwares for this phone, which surprises me and is quite encouraging (although of course I wouldn't expect to see this officially for a long time).

...oh, and forgot to mention that this one appears to add OTA firmware updating...

EDIT: Also forgot to mention this one had WAP/PIXT/Internet settings for Vodafone configured out of the box (nice!). Shame it chose WAP as default, but not too much of a hardship to select Internet, certainly easier than manually inputting your settings...

Morning has arrived and with the rapture comes the angst.

WiFi has popped its clogs. Won't stay connected to the router, even with a fixed IP, although it sees the network.

Not sure if that's the ROM, the SuperOneClick, the lag fix itself or some other thing entirely, but best I google it.

The impetuousness of it all. Ah well...

back to the drawing board.

Nice to know that. A lot of my apps think they're running for the first time, though, which suggests my data has gone to some extent, but my SMSs and emails are all there. And my contacts, so it seems somewhat arbitrary.

You really should do this mod. The phone has shown me a slickness that I had never experienced, or dreamed of. Exaggerating? No. It's just so 'sensory' that it seems unlikely. Lagfix, schmagfix. Couldnt have said it any better myself!!!

After 18 odd hours with this i am VERY impressed. First thing i noticed was battstat not working but its something i can live without for the time being. Every aspect of using the phone (between apps, email, calendar etc) is far superior (i was on JPK previously). This IS how it should have bee out of the box.

I think wifi might be a bit buggy, but turning off wireless and then back on seems to have helped this.

Flashing via Odin can be a bit daunting, however it is pretty easy. Rooting via Superoneclick is a breeze (my first time)

Im happy to answer any questions via PM - im not a massive tech person but i've had help from here and am happy to return the favour!

Time will tell with lag etc... i've got about 50 odd apps back and its still purring like a kitten.

Heh apparently LG Optimus One handsets are now confirmed to be getting Gingerbread yet Samsung still are undecided on the SGS, what a disappointment.

Upgraded to Froyo yesterday, but looking through the network settings, I have tethering via USB, but no WIFI hotspot, can someone confirm if their SGS is also missing it. On a stock phone.

So I must be the only person on the planet to not get the Kies reg hack to work with my Telecom Galaxy.

I load the patch program, select a UK Spoof product code, re select the Telecom NZ product code, write the registry.

The firmware updater in Kies gives me the same old "this devices version cannot be updated"

(current version = PDA:JM6 / Phone : JM3 / CSC JM1)

Any suggestions?

common sense would dictate that you if you instantly reverse the reg changes then nothing would happen, maybe you have to scan to see available updates after changing to UK code, then change back to NZ code prior to updating the firmware? I don't know as I never went this method (I used odin and CWM)

Just updated to 2.2.1 from 2.1, via ODIN, I can say I'm impressed!

My phone is now very fast, has no lag, and lots of colour.
Lots of apps have been updated - gmail for one, has a lot of polishing.
This is totally awsome!

Anyone who's still on 2.1, have a look a Galaxy S running 2.2.1, you'll want to upgrade!

It simply means that the upgrade path doesn't apply to the specific regional or carrier ROM info that Kies extracts from your device. When you use the registry hack for Kies, you choose an appropriate ROM that suits the upgrade path. When Kies checks it, it believes that the spoofed info is the stuff it recently extracted from the phone. But of course it's mistaken.

So, in theory anyway, you should be able to get 2.2.1 on your device. I suggest you google the topic for more specific info about what you'll need to spoof, if nobody here can help.

If I flash 2.2.1 and I need to return to 2.2 can I use the Kies reg hack to return to 2.2?

I have only flashed the 3 button recovery so far.

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.
