roderickh:
Guys,
Spotted on a few news articles this morning that Google has suspended some business with Huawei which includes Android OS upgrades and Google Play Services with their future devices - what's your take on this considering NZ is pushing Huawei advertising heavily on just about every media source?
Is the recently released P30 now not worth buying anymore? If this is to be permanent then it might be the start of a 3rd major OS.
The guys at Jolla might see an opportunity to expand their horizons with Sailfish OS. They've already made a few inroads on other countries where Android and to a lesser extent iOS aren't seen as the optimum choice of OS.

If this report is correct it will definitely make me rethink my use of Google products. I know this will be pointless exercise for me in a global sense but it make me feel better. I dislike this sort of commercial dishonesty.

I do not believe this is Google's fault here. They have to follow the US government mandate.

To be fair to Google - its not really their fault. The law of the land was changed on a presidential order on Thursday to say that no American company should have a business relationship with Huawei.
And from the report its still just a case of them trying to figure out what they can and can't do under the new restrictions

@mikeb4 as above. A company that does business with an embargoed country or organisation is at risk of great fines and sanctions. when I worked for an American company we had to sign a statement every year to confirm we have reviewed the terms and the list of embargoed countries and organisations.
It's not on Google. It's on Trump.

I never said the commercial dishonesty rests with Google alone.

You explicitly mentioned Google. It would be no different it was Microsoft or Apple in that same position.

My exact words were "If this report is correct it will definitely make me rethink my use of Google products. I know this will be pointless exercise for me in a global sense but it make me feel better. I dislike this sort of commercial dishonesty." I have NOT mentioned Google or any other OEM in my reference to commercial dishonesty, therefore I did not mean it relates to just one. Please do add to my words or meaning.
I do not like Googles response to the trade war so I will rethink my use of their products.

Ok, quoting your exact words above then. Again, it is not Google's response to the trade war. They're legally forced to act this way.

You are free to believe that this is not related to the US/China trade war as I am free to believe the opposite.
The official US Department of Commerce release:
Effective May 16, 2019, the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) amended the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) by adding Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. (Huawei) to the Entity List. Huawei has been determined by the U.S. Government to be acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States. BIS is also adding Huawei’s non-U.S. affiliates to the Entity List because they pose a significant risk of becoming involvement in activities contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States due to their relationship with Huawei. Huawei will be listed on the Entity List under the destination of China. This final rule also adds to the Entity List seventy-two non-U.S. affiliates of Huawei located in twenty-six destinations: Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Burma, Canada, Chile, China, Egypt, Germany, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Madagascar, Netherlands, Oman, Pakistan, Paraguay, Qatar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom, and Vietnam.

I did not say anywhere before this point it is not related to the US/China trade war. I believe it is.
However, regardless of it being related or not to the trade war, it is still not Google's response. Google has to follow the law and the law is clear. US-based companies are not allowed, or are restricted, on what they can do with companies in the list.
