The white charging cable that comes with the Moto G charges my S4 at 720mah, according to an app called "galaxy charging current lite". The S4 cable does 1200mah, and the cables from this thread are 1200mah as well. If you want your moto G to charge quickly best get a better cable.

The PSU was a Belkin Dual that supplies 2x1.2A.

Sure, but the general idea is the cable that comes with the Moto G will charge the phone slower than a higher quality cable. I might try a charging test one day, but I probably don't care enough.



The Cable can not affect the charging unless its faulty, plus  the Micro USB Plug would be getting HOT, so your theories are not correct, the so called lose of current has to some ware, like Hot  Micro USB Plug .

My experience suggests the cable can make a difference to charge speeds. I'm not suggesting loss of current to heat, I'm suggesting that thinner cables can't carry as much current as easily. Like a six lane road can carry more traffic than a single lane road.

If thats the case then the cable will get hot, the lose of current has to go someware, like running a 10AMP heater fed from a 5AMP cable, the cable gets very HOT due to its resistance.

Interested to hear from others on this subject, I'm not an expert, just university physics and electronics which is a bit rusty now. When my battery's low enough I'll try each cable for a set amount of time and see if it makes any practical difference.

Has anyone figured out a way to get this phone direct from Motorola(eg proxy and youshop) ? I have a discount code for their side that is making it hard to resist but remember hearing about orders being cancelled.

My vague understanding is the plug pack supplies a given amount of current, but a device only draws as much as it needs/wants/can.  So for example, plugging in a device that only draws 500mA from a 1.8A charger is OK.

So it's not inconceivable that a low quality cable will restrict the amount of current a device is able to draw - in my mind it's a bit like a drinking straw - the bigger the straw, the more flow (to a point).

I seem to recall Motorola use to have some components (resistors?) across a couple of pins in their cables. Either my Razzr or my Defy would only charge correctly on some cables, but all cables were fine with other brand handsets

It's a factor of length of cable and wire guage. I have several usb cables, a 3m ribbon type actually loses so much that it will only increase my charge by 10% overnight. Losses at 5v is significant. This is why you don't have your whole house wired at a safe 5v, the cables would have to be to fat to not melt down.

Tonight I tried charging my S4 with two different cables, from the same charger. You can see the data here. I don't know why, but I do know that with the S4 the cable can make a big difference to the speed your phone charges.

I'll try with the Moto G in a day or two (battery's full right now), and I'll try with the S4 again too, and with the S4 stock cable. I welcome anyone else's results, thoughts, etc.

Battery percentage rates aren't linear. They're linearised using a learning algorithm on the phone to help estimate and linearise the "battery percentage" data.

You'll have to do a test from the same percentage value for that to be remotely accurate. If you're doing this from a good current monitor, if you're doing this from an app on the phone, your errors are huge anyway.

But then again, the best way would to be ignore the "percentage" and use voltage. The point above would still apply however.

That's why I only did a 20 minute test, a compromise between not letting the battery state too much, and giving it enough time to be significant. Yes I'll do the test the other way round some time.

I'm not sure why people are arguing so hard against this. Some cables charge phones faster. It's hardly breaking news, it's been mentioned on digg, I think there waa kickstarter campaign to create good cables, etc.
