Forgotten: Yea it's an XT version, did notice in SGS tools when I had a look at the bands WCDMA850 was disabled to start with, though I've enabled it now so it should be working - and it's not.

The default I9000 baseband is 900/2100. I know Doc's kernel is i9000 and his built in modems are usually 900/2100 to match the hardware. Does his Roms include the modem as well?

You could try the JK3 or JK4 or JL3 modems which are WCDMA850 default. Us Captivate users are able to use these 850 modems via an I9000 kernel.

Im sure this is the reason you dont have connectivity. All custom ROMs can allow WCDMA850 to be "selected" however if the model/kernel doesnt match the hardware, it wont work regardless.

Edit: Thanks Neets, you got in before me, Yeps try JK3. JK4 and JL3 are also available for default 850 3G/WCDMA

As I recall, Doc started a thread for Captivate users. XDA search is unavailable (to me at least) for 10 minutes. But you could look for all posts by Doc and hopefully you'll spot the Captivate one.

I say Captivate becuase it seemed to be for Bell/Canadian users who have the same (or some of) bands as XT

Yeps Neets, it is the Bell and Rogers I9000s that have default 850 3G bands.. The reason we have had to grab these modems is because AT&T capped the upload speed of the default modem to 300kb/s This was so the iPhone 4 users could get more of the bandwidth, as they were determined to be "more valuable".. pfft.

edit: I LOVE YOU. As soon as phone booted I got a flood of texts, now hooked up to the network fine.

Going to go to XXJPY, that's bound to break something and should take most of the night to fix. :)

That's the plan anyway, when I went to XXJPY before I noticed Swype wasn't installed by default and when trying to install the beta through the proper method I get nothing but force closes during the installation.

Might try install from a Titanium backup or grab the Swype.apk and libSwypeCore.so (or whatever it's called - I saved these after I rolled back to XXJPU) and put them in their proper places manually.

I'm sure I'll work it out anyway, I've got ten hours. :)

Haha yea, I work four days a week for 10 hours per shift (I work in the Telecom NOC - the guys who manage the XT/CDMA network are about two meters from where I'm sitting right now ;D). So I'm on the 9pm-7am shift starting tonight through till Friday morning.

Oh, well that's kinda cool to do 4 x 10hour days. You'll be done your work week before me! And I got the rdp to work be remoting into work from my own laptop believe it or not. Will be just a 2 minute job from home now - woo hoo!

Okay, for something completely different

I'm really keen to see videos people have taken on their Galaxy S or Captivate. Here's 3 that I've uploaded recently.

2 night videos taken last week. What do you guys think about the quality? They're all in 480p quality.

This is a house at Temple View, Hamilton. Recorded the lights at Temple View before seeing this house on a side street so stopped for a nosey!

I'd followed some other instructions (a link from the create your own CSC link (from the 4th post on Docs rom thread)) and managed to sign my own zip file. But I never tested it. I was too afraid I'd have cocked it up, despite seeing evidence the META files had been recreated. But that tool looks a lot simpler, or at least simpler by automating the signing. Not sure if it's quick to create it on the phone though.

Yes know your building :-) My brother (RIP) was there now and then managing the Hamilton branch of Yellow Pages.

Incidently, I work in the same building as your 123 Team. They had floors 4 5 6. Now just 5 and 6. We took over floor 4 when some of the work was transferred to Manila.

After having had a guts full of Nokia I am looking @ Samsung Galaxy. iPhone4 is too cliche and I have always liked the underdog.

I had a test drive of one and liked it but have a few questions for any owners out there:

1. I see you can get a App to sync with iTunes - work ok?
2. Does the google maps give you turn by turn voice nav in NZ?
3. Anyone know of a Synergy client for it?
4. I assume if you can get shell access you can run pretty much anything?

I had a look at getting one in from the states via Amazon and Shipittome - but the price difference was negligible - anyone have any reco's on where to buy?

Might be better to get one in NZ. The prices seem to be pretty good at the moment. Not sure where, although Im sure the likes of JB HiFi, Harvey Norman, DSE are all comparable at the moment.

1. Why iTunes? Isn't iTunes the source of all iPhones problems? You could try Doubletwist - works well, http://doubletwist.com/

2. Not Voice Nav, but "Google Maps Navigation" does providing you have Cell Coverage, if not - then there are are heaps of apps out there to do that for you.

3. Have no idea sorry.

4. You sure can, it's known as "Rooting" - but with great power comes great responsibility. If you don't know what you are doing you can really muck up your phone. But without rooting you still have more power than those silly iDevices.

Just grab one from Vodafone or Telecom - It is worth buying local since you always have somebody to come to for problems.

For those of you who dont know synergy lets you (via lan) move your mouse across screens and then your keyboard inout is directed at that device. So if you had three computers next to each other

A=mac
B=PC
C=Ubuntu

A --- B ---- C

So you have three screens and computers but one keyboard mouse. You can move your mouse off the right hand side of the PC in the middle and it magically scrolls across the edge of the screen seamlessly to your mac. Its really handy.

Now imagine being able to do that with your Galaxy when typing a long text - very cool.

I know N900 could do it.....
