The casting works, via Google Home. It's not as elegant as just having an icon in the top shade as you seem to have to go right into Google Home to get it to work each time, but it does work.

Also, the fuss over the fingerprint scanner position must have been from people with midget hands. Yes, there are better places but it really isn't THAT bad. Sony's implementation where it is incorporated into the Power button is better, although just having the phone read your finger as you press the glass where the 'home button' is will be the best until the phone can sync with the chip the aliens put in my head.

I have found having a case has fix any issue i had with where the finger print scanner is.  sure it would be better in the middle but i no long press the camera.

Having a cover just splits the camera and fingerprint scanner out just enough so you can tell the differences.

I still think they could have placed it in a better spot.. I'd love to have it in the home button..

However it's a time thing I spose.. but I've found myself using the pattern more than the fingerprint reader..

So. I just took the opportunity to watch the first 5 minutes of The Grand Tour, which I have never seen.

OMFG. It's like having a TV in your pocket at last. The quality, colour and sharpness are absolutely stunning.

How did you get access to it from your phone, I have tried, but I am going round and round in circles.

NM: I had to download underground, then amazon video, then login, then search, then play. I am impressed though at the quality of both sound and video. How do I tell if it's 4k (I can probably find out, I am being lazy).

My PBTech pre-order for the black 8+ still says "Awaiting Goods". Messaged via their website yesterday morning but no response.

Yes it's beyond their control but the lack of comms is disappointing.

Didn't really want to be a pain as I can imagine they would be getting harassed already :) Anyway, just used their online chat and was told that they have stock now and are now waiting for a courier to collect.

In the end I have decided that the fingerprint scanner placement is a non-event. I have moved to using either one of my smart watches as a trusted device on my S6 and will do the same with the S8 when it arrives. The only security risk is if someone steals my phone AND my watch.
Not in any hurry as the S8 won't be going outside until the cover I ordered from Hong Kong arrives.

Have my S8+ now via Vodafone pre-order. Orchid Grey, think it'll grown on me!

Will grab a clear Spigen case. I've always used the clear Spigen case for my current s6 and the previous s4.

Ok so my $20 samsung thin case has turned up.

Ordered friday, shipped yesterday, turned up this morning.

If you are like me and like a case that is thin and you don't notice it on then its the one to get.  Does not alter the feel of the phone that much and you would not really notice it when looking at the phone.

I like this one better than the $60 - 80 ones that samsung also make.

I might try that.. I have  the Gear S2.. so might try that out..

I bought a $20 case from PB Tech.. seems to do the trick for me..

I can't see that providing much drop protection.

So... I decided to bite the bullet and pre-order my Galaxy S8. Still have 2 days before the offer of a free 256GB card expired right?

WRONG!

I turned up at Noel lemmings to do my pre-order (and secure that 256GB memory card), and there is a big alert at the top of the cashier screen saying they have run out of memory cards!

Apparently, they tell me Samsung only allocated so many memory cards, and once they run out that's it. First I've heard of that.

So, I declined not to go ahead with the pre-order.

I'll wait to see what happens to the price or what future offer may develop... or maybe have a closer look at the competitor models.

I'm putting all my eggs into the Pixel 2 basket (now only 6 months away). Hopefully, following the overwhelming positive press on the S8 design, Google will be have no option but to get rid the humongous bexels on Pixel's next iteration! Once they're gone, I'm in.

I am sure it did say "while stocks last" for the cards.

Might be other retailers that still have stock.
