No proof of purchase though, so no free repairs.

Leading edge usually ask for proof of purchase. Telecom stores can check the serial number directly in their system to check the network activation date.

Might be worth calling into the local telecom store to check.

looks dodge as......still no units have come to the telecom shops , can phone order them threw telecoms mine should be here in a few days......

yeps, do have to wonder, hard to imagine anyone in management just giving these phones up and 2 as well.

I may have inadvertantly stuffed up on my flash by failing to fully charge the battery prior to doing it. Not sure whether or not Android expects the battery to be at 100% in actuality before resetting the battery stats file, and assumes that whatever level of charge it actually has equals 100% even though it might be much less.

Which would mean that the OS would chuck the charging circuit into idle when it reached the figure it erroneously believed to be 100% although it might well have been less. If that makes sense.

So having done that, you'd potentially (see what I did there?) have to use a dumb charger to force-fill the battery before you could get it to accurately recalibrate. Or not. *Sigh* I really don't have a clue, as I'm sure you can tell. In the absence of a dumb charger, your only option (and mine) is to fully charge the battery whilst the SGS is switched off. Otherwise, the battery stats file would limit the charge to whatever the stats file said it was, true or not.

So logic dictates that those folk who think that a full charge requires the phone to be switched off, are most probably correct. (Or possibly not).

Oh well... it'll teach me for ignoring the details when I flash stuff I guess.

You are worrying too much about it. You will be fine.

MY observations about battery life in Android:

Lithium Ion (Lion) batteries loose capacity over their lifetime. Android attempts to keep pace of this, so when the battery is drained the battery meter was somewhere near zero first.

But because WE flash a new rom every few days, the statistics never get a chance to re-align with OUR battery because the file is overwritten with the new flash.

So, if you want your battery correctly calibrated, you CAN do the whole drain-wipe-charge thing, and it sometimes even works. But really what you should do is leave it alone for a while. Just use the phone. Let the OS fix it. Might take a week.I once didn't flash the sgs for a few weeks (blasphemy!!!), and towards the end I was getting some pretty good battery life.

Moral of the story: if you flash lots, your battery meter is never going to tell you the truth.

Having said that, A few things I have noticed with battery life:

1. There are many things that effect your battery life that are out of your control. Primarily it's signal strength. If it's raining, or you have lots of trees, or someone is using a microwave, or lots of people are using cell phones, or the tower is far away or obscured, or your big hand is over the aerial, or your car body is made of metal, or you are in a concrete building -- all will affect signal strength. The phone then boost the signal, using BATTERY POWER.

2. 3g is both expensive and a battery drainer. If you are not using 3g, turn it to 2g only mode. Most phones have TWICE the standby time on 2g as they do on 3g.

3. Keep your phone warm. Against your body. A cold battery is a weak battery (basic chemistry).

4. The screen uses a lot of power. More even than the radio. So turn it to auto-brightness, or manually turn it up and down. Tip: if you set the screen brightness to manual, you can tap and hold the notification bar, and while holding swipe left or right and this will increase or decrease the brightness. it's a shortcut. I personally use auto brightness.

5. The super amoled screen on the sgs uses more power the brighter the COLOURS are. So, favor dark themes, dar backgrounds, etc on your apps. It's easier to read anyway. If you have white backgrounds and dark writing on everything...

Just a quick tip: there was a guy on trademe a while ago selling "Best Skins Ever" body armour kits for the Sgs. I brought one for $18 (full body skin protection against scratches and fingerprintes), and having used it for a few months I can tell you now it's great!

It 'self heals' - e.g I did get a few long, tiny scratches in it, but after a few hours they had disappeared! Bloody great. It's been in my pocket (no keys etc) for months now, doesn't seem to have a big problem with lifting or browning etc.

It's a prick to apply - took a while, because of wanting it to be perfect. Do it in the bathroom with the shower running, it'll reduce the dust problem.

i got mine threw telecom phone order, ringing up telecom u will need there home line with them so they can bill you or go on a non contract plan for $29 a month like i did .i will go on to prepay after the months up...

they just post it out to you ,yups been waiting for weeks for them to come at the stores.....this is way better

I've recalibrated the battery and generated a new stats file and so far, the charge is approximating what it was when I was on JPU. At this rate, it'll run flat at someplace between 25 and 35 hours, which is what I'd expect. I'll know mid morning tomorrow one way or t'other.

If I seem a bit obsessed with this, it's because the performance of the battery since the flash was spectacularly cr@p compared to what I'm used to. Not a few percentage points - we're talking half the endurance, which was a bit of a shock to be honest. However, I know I didn't top the charge up before I flashed and it's my own stoopid fault. Simple requirement, bad execution.

Thanks for your musings on your battery experience. I take a few basic steps myself to eke out the endurance of the SGS, including turning off data when it's not needed, wifi when it's not needed, GPS unless I genuinely need it, screen brightness is on 'auto', Bluetooth is most always off and so on, so I do what I think is appropriate without defeating the notion of it being a smartphone.

I am going to have a play with the noLED settings though, as I have notification duration set to infinity, which means that once a notification appears, the screen is on 'forever' (or at least until I unlock the screen... :D ) and that wonerful screen eats battery charge like there's no tomorrow. But I reeeeeally like that app, so I'll find a way to make it more frugal with ergs without compromising its utility. (I hope).

I use BLN for lighting up the LEDs to let me know I have notifications, it's pretty power efficient according to the creator (like 0.14% battery drain per hour).

I am waiting for my new OEM battery to arrive, hopefully it will actually show up unlike the extended one that I ordered that never showed up.

My battery life doesn't get better no matter how long I stick with the same ROM.

Would those LEDs be the 'menu' and 'back' touchy switches? Low power drain would be nice assuming the software allows all the usual notifications to trigger the illumination of the soft swithches.

Where did you finally track down a genuine oem battery?

I use the front, back, sides, the whole thing is covered from head to toe. Except the holes lol...

The screen protector is the best screen protector I have ever used - and that is over 5 smartfones, over the last 5 years odd. The thing that amazes me still is that the blacks on my amoled display are PITCH black, piano black. I still have a high gloss finish on the screen, and the whole phone.

It does not seem to detract from the swipeness of the screen. When newly applied, it might be a little rubbery but it seems to harden up, and for a few weeks had a slight orange-peel look from certain angles (but this was invisible with the screen on and disappeared after a few weeks). It is also fingerprint resistant (to a fairly high degree). After some months of usage, it is as smooth and slippery as the bare screen if not more.

I cannot reccomend it highly enough. Even if you only get the screen protection you will be pleased.

Swiping it just not repeatedly as I eat my lunch, I do not see any fingerprints. It feels smooth and my finger glides.

I better stop before people get turned on lol.

Anyway, for $18 you cannot go wrong. The one and only problem is that it's a prick to install: but worth it. It'll be the last one you ever need I bet. And it's semi-self healing properties push it over the top. Reviews are all over the web.

It's the "self-healing" qualities I like. Especially after my little accident on Saturday.

Yeah the Menu and Back buttons stay on when you have notifications to check and the screen is off. BLN is part of several custom kernels including Speedmod.

I found a genuine OEM battery on Ebay, if it turns out to be fake I will lay a complaint as it cost a lot more than the Chinese ones.

What I really want is that extended 2700mah battery with the stand but it costs $40 USD + Shipping
