I find enough thru rdio to make this non interesting.

If google could get their brand behind a subscription service it might be interesting, but rdio works on everything I have, even some dire $40 tablets and the quality is fine for non serious listening. For that I have my "aquired" flac collection, but I havent added to that anything that wasnt something I was getting for someone else in many months. rdio is good enough.

On a serious side though good to see the store adding the music would be nice to get the full store here though.

What I'm interested to know is that a lot of commentors here state too little too late due to using subscription services for approx $12 - $15 a month. How much were you all paying for muic prior to using these services a month/year??? Do you all listen a lot (roughly how many hours a week would you listen). Lastly what were you using prior to these sub services if it was your own personal collections what has happened to them since these services have been used??? Are they no longer used??? You've sold your collections, listened to the radio???

I'm just curious I listen to music probably about 6 hourss a day at work and about 2 out of work on a normal day. I have a collection of approx 17000 mp3's on my pc (65 gig) and just over 10 gig on my phone just over 2000 songs. I listen mainly to Radio Hauraki at work and my personal collection out of work. Please note the above figures don't include music videos I have of varying formats ranging from single songs to concerts which is around 200 items at 25 gig. I still have a physical music collection (CD's, DVD's Bluray) that gets added to every now and then.

Just would like to get some ideas as to the appeal of these services compared a setup like I use.

I use a streaming service almost every day. The appeal for me is that it's a legal way for me to always have the latest songs while also being able to compile play lists of older stuff. Since moving to subscription I've not had to access any of my old mp3 collection at all, and it costs me less than the price of a cd per month. Same goes for Google music, if I can cache many albums for less than the price of one, then it's better in the long term. Additionally, if the album gets a bit boring I haven't committed to that album and can move onto the next.

Has anyone managed to get the scan and match functionality to work? The Music Manager app scanned the thousand or so music files on my computer and found precisely zero matches. All have the appropriate tags, etc so not sure what I'm doing wrong...

I'm a bit old school and like to have an MP3 collection which gets added to slowly when I hear something that grabs my ear. Last year I only bought 10 tracks in total, so it needs to be something pretty special before I'll lay out the coin. For me, it isn't worth paying $13 per month for streaming when a lot of my listening is done in the car where I don't want to be paying 3G mobile data charges.

Therefore Google Play suits me perfectly, and thanks MF for posting the press release, which I have yet to see reported in the mainstream media. I was a bit gutted this morning when Marbecks Digital announced their closure, but I suspect that the release of Google Play into NZ has a lot to do with it. The best thing is that the files from Google Play are downloaded as 320kbps MP3s, not tied into anything starting with an "i". They can easily be copied to the USB stick in my car, my old-school Motorola mobile phone or whatever. It's nice to have open access to the downloaded files from Windows Explorer without needing to convert them first.

Having browsed through the Google Play store for a few hours, there is a lot to like, and Marbecks Digital looks pretty dated by comparison. There are extensive back catalogues in some fairly niche genres and I managed to find a Psychedelic Rock album which I haven't been able to enjoy since the demise of my turntable at the hands of our (then) young kids. It was a favourite back when my wife and I were dating, so brings back a lot of happy memories...

Also agree GrantK, streaming out the back blocks of the Wairarapa or long haul flying just doesnt cut it.
