alexx:

So what might keep Symbian users with Nokia and entice them to switch to Windows Phone?
One of the main things could be preloaded Nokia maps that can be used offline.

In fact, it's my understanding that Microsoft might have the option to offer Nokia maps on other Windows Phones too.

So the timing seemed interesting, given those first Nokia Windows Phones might be coming end 2011/early 2012.

Nokia (Ovi) maps have always been able to be used off line and already come standard on all Nokia smart phones with the country of sale pre loaded including free turn by turn navigation.  Map sets for other countries can be loaded free of charge.  I don't see the WP7 devices being without Ovi maps and other Nokia feature otherwise that will drive away current Nokia owners.

Yes, I think you're right about the possibility of Ovi maps being loaded on other WP7 phones.  Certainly from my understanding the deal between Nokia and Microsoft, gives Microsoft access to Ovi maps for it's Bing search engine.

What also might entice Nokia owners to stay with Nokia is the imminent release of at least one phone with the Meego platform.  Very interesting timing on that to with the release of the WP7 devices.

dafman: This sounds great. I used Google 'My Tracks' yesterday for the first time on a bike ride. It worked perfectly - except that it chewed up 35gb data on a 1.5 hour ride! I was going to ditch using it until I read this post.

I have downloaded 10sq miles around my address - which is all of central Wellington up to J'ville - which will cover all future rides.

One question, though - after I finished, maps gave me a schematic of my download area - all good - except there was no 'save' option, so I just backed out using the back button. I assume it has saved. Is there anyway to check the maps you have downloaded?

I use it all the tine and it doesn't chew up any data , all it needs is a GPS signal, and I'm out of Cell range a lot of the time. Maybe disable packet data before you start?

I have been using OSMAND for a while and find it good.  You can download maps for any (most) countries and can update NZ ones every 2 weeks if you want.  Has lots of POI.  You can do offline navigation.

It will be intersting to see if Google maps is better offline.

5.7 seems to have stopped working for me. Normal tiles are cached initially but but for some undetermined reason, gets reset to 0 bytes after an undetermined time or reset by something.

10mi tiling is set, but doesnt appear to work as data still downloads. Tried reinstalling to no avail.

Anyone else with issues? It appears to have happened after a sd card change for some reason.

My map caching still works fine.  Haven't changed my SD card, but isn't that where it will store the cache?  Cached maps are accessed by Menu > More > Cache settings > Downloaded map areas.  If I just try to go to the location instead of manually going to the cache, it downloads the map tiles all over again.

As for the 845, the update to allow caching may be Android version specific hence the option is not available.  Not sure what version the 845 is running.

I go into menu>more>cache settings>downloaded maps and it brings up a schematic of the download area. Great. While it is showing the download tile, with data turned off, I use the search function to look for a street in the area, but to no avail. As long as data is off, it can't resolve the search. What am I doing wrong - any ideas?

Last I checked, I had the same problem with my Huawei U8150.

Ok, I have been able to resolve why I am unable to search in downloaded maps. You need a data connection to do this. Downloading the map only gives you the downloaded map tile - you can zoom in and move around manually within the map, you just can't do any actions on it. Better than nothing I suppose.
