I know you can get into the why's and wherefore's about whether a manufacturer should support better than they do, and I'm the first to admit Samsung's support of the SGS has been terrible, but here's my summation:
Who cares?
I mean, would you rather have the optimized, modular, completely open-ended contributions of XDA et al, or the any-colour-you-like-as-long-as-it's-black approach of Samsung/HTC/Motorola/Apple.
Samsung make best-of-class hardware (and HTC are damn good too), and as long as they make the source code available, it's a win-win.
Completely my opinion here, but I feel that bemoaning Samsung for a lack of support is kind of missing the point of Android.
If you want something that is as good as it will ever be (pretty much) out of the box, buy something from a closed-source manufacturer like Apple or Microsoft.
Note, I'm talking about O/S support here, not hardware faults etc; I suspect all OEM's are pretty lousy at dealing with this.

Neets:
It's the "self-healing" qualities I like. Especially after my little accident on Saturday.
Well the auction I'd linked to was gone but I've managed to find another one from the seller, it has my name on it and SOLD.
Don't suppose you want to put it on for me - haha
bigal_nz: Hi Guys,
What is everyone using to put music on there SGS?
What about iTunes library?
Cheers

I have been impressed by samsung's support really - they have released many updates and revision of their system software, seem to be pretty prompt releasing the source code as well, and don't seem to be too particular with warranty repairs.
HTC, on the other hand, took an age to release updates, very seldom released source code, seem fine with repairs, but couldn't answer my queries about their sync software (busy waiting as it was in that version), nor about their android version's inability to change the voicemail number manually (slingshot, in their infinite wisdom, chose to put vodafone's voicemail number in their sim and HTC wouldn't let me change it).
Nokia i am told are just as bad; Sony-ericsson too (if anyone has had to deal with sony they know what i mean). Can't imagine RIM are any better. Apple are legendary nazi's - it was never really YOUR phone anyway, as far as they are concerned.
I'm curious: just what phone company DO you think is better than samsung (in terms of support) and Why? Do you have examples or stats we can look at? Who knows maybe we'll all get one next time too.
Neets: @r2d2 are you going to say what apps you're developing or is it a secret? Btw I like secrets and I'm very trustworthy :D

I have an HTC Desire and my wife, son and workmates have Galaxy S. When Froyo was released I got OTA in August from memory, I gave up on waiting for Samsung to release Froyo and did the reg hack in December. Maybe you are referring to older HTC phones?

Hi Neets.
One app is an entertainment (read time-waster) fun thing, that lets you customise it to your own preferences and the other is a small utility for automating parts of your social life. I'm also learning to modify the Android APIs to create a new communications wrinkle which, if it works, will be a fun thing to have and share with your family/friends/workmates. It's something that will be unlikely to ever be available on the iOS platform due to Apple's walled garden approach, hence the reason I'm now an Android dev rather than an iOS one.
So, two apps in alpha, and the one with the most potential is a long way back...
I'll be announcing beta testing in a new thread when I'm ready to get feedback, and anybody who's interested in being a tester can drop me a PM to volunteer (crazy, brave peeps...). I'm not expecting to have the first beta available until mid year as I'm doing this part time, and some of the hurdles are mighty daunting to a solo programmer.
Sorry I can't be more specific, but I need to be closer to beta testing before I can spill the beans.
Thanks for the interest though, and I'll reserve a spot on the test team for you. Now, about that 12 page NDA you'll be signing...
Cheers,
R2D2

No, I am referring to all HTC phones. I have owned the Harrier, Apache, Vouge, and the Desire. NONE of them had timely updates, all of them required some sort of hacking to upgrade at all. With the Desire, we all waited until WELL after most everyone else already had their 2.2.
I liked the Desire, would still be using it. But Mine decided to have a faulty microphone just before xmas, and I had to send it away. I wasn't going to be without a smart phone for several weeks (turned out to be closer to 8 weeks!), so I bought a SGS (I had reccomended one to a friend and was impressed) and sold the Desire when it came back.
I haven't regretted it. As good as the Desire is, The SGS is a bit better. It's lighter, has a better screen in sunlight, and is faster.
